Important Information Related to the SSC CGL Typing Test

Due to a glitch, the SSC has canceled the typing test (data entry speed test) for the CGL Exam. The exam was held in shift 2 on 18th January 2025. As per the latest notice, the SSC has decided to conduct the SSC CGL Typing Test on 31st January 2025. The exam will start at 1:00 PM. So, candidates who are eligible to appear in the SSC CGL Typing Test are highly advised to go through this notice carefully and know all the important details related to the SSC CGL Typing Test 2025 in this blog.

SSC CGL Typing Speed 2025

SSC CGL typing speed test is a skill test that assesses the candidate’s ability to type in English or Hindi on a computer. The candidates have to type at least 2000 key depressions in 15 minutes. The key depressions include alphabets, numbers, symbols, and space bars. The candidates have to maintain an accuracy of at least 80% in their typing. The accuracy is calculated based on the errors made in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and formatting.

To clear this test, candidates are advised that their minimum typing speed for English must be 35 words per minute (wpm), and for Hindi typing speed should be 30 wpm. The SSC CGL typing test speed is calculated based on the correct words typed in 10 minutes.

SSC CGL Typing Test for Which Post?

The SSC CGL typing test is only applicable to candidates who have applied for the posts of Tax Assistant (Central Excise and Income Tax) and Assistant Section Officer of CSS. The typing test is conducted after the Tier-II exam and before the document verification. As per the latest updates, the SSC has successfully conducted the SSC CGL Tier 2 exam. Candidates who will qualify for the SSC CGL Tier 2 exam will be eligible to appear for the typing test.

SSC CGL Typing Test Rules

  1. The typing test is a qualifying exam and does not contribute to the overall score.
  2. Candidates must complete a passage of approximately 2000 key depressions within 15 minutes.
  3. Minimum error limits must be met based on the candidate’s category:
    • UR (Unreserved): 20% errors allowed
    • OBC/EWS: 25% errors allowed
    • SC/ST/Others: 30% errors allowed
  4. The test is conducted using SSC-provided computers and specialized software.
  5. No retyping is allowed; any remaining time should be used for error correction.
  6. Proper posture and the use of all fingers for touch typing are essential for speed and accuracy.
  7. Candidates with disabilities may receive extra time or use a scribe, depending on their eligibility.

SSC CGL Typing Software and Mode

The SSC CGL typing test is conducted on a computer using software provided by the commission. The software has a built-in timer that starts and stops automatically. The candidates have to type in Microsoft Word with font size 12 and font type Times New Roman. The candidates can choose either English or Hindi as their medium of typing. However, they cannot switch between the languages once they start typing. The candidates are not allowed to use any external keyboard, mouse, or any other device. They are also not allowed to use any editing tools such as backspace, delete, cut, copy, paste, undo, redo, etc.

The SSC CGL typing test does not have any fixed syllabus or topics. The candidates have to type a passage given on the screen.   1. For every omission of a word/figure.
  2. For every substitution of a wrong word/figure, except transposition of words.
  3. For every addition of a word/figure not found in the passage.
  4. For every spelling error committed by way of repetition, or addition, or omission, or substitution of a letter/letters, e.g. the word ‘spelling’ typed as seeplings; seplling; speling; seepling; spelling etc.
  5. For repetition of word/figure, e.g. ‘I shall shall be grateful ……….’
  6. Incomplete words (half typed words will be treated as mistake).

SSC CGL Typing Test Error Half Mistakes

  1. Spacing Error: Incorrect spacing between words or between the letters of a word is a half-mistake. For example, typing “Ihope” instead of “I hope” counts as a mistake.
  2. Wrong Capitalization: Incorrect use of capital and small letters (e.g., typing “She went back Home” instead of “She went back home”) is considered a half-mistake.
  3. Punctuation Error: Missing, adding, or misplacing punctuation marks (e.g., “They, wanted to go see a movie.”) results in a half-mistake.
  4. Transposition Error: Changing the order of words in a sentence (e.g., typing “hope I” instead of “I hope”) counts as a half-mistake.
  5. Paragraphic Error: This error occurs when there is unnecessary space before a paragraph or when the Tab key is not pressed at the beginning of a paragraph.

Tips to Improve SSC CGL Typing Speed Skills

The SSC CGL typing test is not very difficult if you practice regularly and improve your typing speed and accuracy. Here are some tips that can help you prepare for the typing test:
