SSC CGL eligibility criteria 2026 define the minimum conditions candidates must meet before applying for the Combined Graduate Level exam. Before applying through the SSC CGL Notification, candidates must check the SSC CGL age limit, SSC CGL qualification, nationality rules, physical standards, and category-wise relaxation before submitting the application form.

Before you fill out the SSC CGL 2026 application form, verify whether you actually meet the SSC CGL eligibility criteria 2026. Every year, many candidates fill the form, appear in the exam, and clear the cut-off, but later face rejection at the document verification stage because they do not meet the age limit, nationality condition, physical standard, or educational qualification required for their preferred post.

As per SSC’s examination guidelines, the Commission accepts applications provisionally, and candidates must prove their educational qualification, age, category, and other claims during document verification. If any claim is not supported by valid certificates, the candidature can be cancelled.

This blog covers everything you need to know about SSC CGL eligibility 2026, including age limit, age relaxation, educational qualification, nationality, physical standards, number of attempts, and PwBD criteria.

The SSC CGL eligibility criteria must be checked post-wise because the same exam recruits candidates for multiple Group B and Group C posts across different ministries, departments, and organizations.

SSC CGL Age Limit 2026

The SSC CGL age limit is not a single number. It varies depending on the post you are applying for. The minimum age across most posts starts from 18 years, while the upper age limit generally goes up to 32 years for selected posts.

Candidates must check the post-wise SSC CGL age limit carefully before applying because age eligibility is calculated as per the cut-off date mentioned in the official notification.

Important Points About SSC CGL Age Limit

  • Check the post-wise upper age limit before selecting your post preference.
  • Calculate your age only as per the cut-off date mentioned in the SSC notification.
  • Apply age relaxation only if you have a valid category certificate.
  • Do not assume that the 32-year ceiling applies to every SSC CGL post.
  • Verify Inspector and Sub-Inspector post requirements separately.

SSC CGL Age Limit Post Wise 2026

SSC CGL posts are grouped into different age categories. The table below shows the commonly followed age brackets:

Age Category

Posts

18–27 years

Assistant Section Officer, Assistant in MEA, Inspector, Sub-Inspector, Tax Assistant, UDC, and other posts as notified

20–30 years

Assistant Section Officer, Sub-Inspector, and selected departmental posts

18–30 years

Tax Assistant, Upper Division Clerk, Statistical Investigator Grade II, and other notified posts

18–32 years

Junior Statistical Officer and selected higher age-limit posts

Before applying, check the official SSC CGL 2026 notification to confirm the final post-wise age limit, as SSC may revise post categories, departments, and age conditions.

Other eligible categories

As mentioned in the official notification

Candidates must possess valid certificates to claim age relaxation. SSC guidelines state that candidates seeking reservation benefits for SC, ST, OBC, EWS, PwBD, or Ex-Servicemen must ensure that they are eligible and have certificates in the prescribed format.

SSC CGL Age Relaxation for Group C Posts

For Group C posts under SSC CGL, the following age relaxation rules apply over and above the upper age limit prescribed for that post:

  • OBC candidates get 3 years of relaxation.
  • SC and ST candidates get 5 years of relaxation.
  • PwBD General candidates get 10 years of relaxation.
  • PwBD OBC candidates get 13 years of relaxation.
  • PwBD SC/ST candidates get 15 years of relaxation.
  • Ex-Servicemen get relaxation as per military service rules and SSC norms.

Group C posts under SSC CGL include Tax Assistant, Upper Division Clerk, and other clerical or administrative posts.

SSC CGL Age Relaxation for Group B Posts

For Group B posts, the age relaxation structure follows the same category-wise pattern but is applied against the specific upper age limit prescribed for that post.

Group B posts under SSC CGL include:

  • Assistant Section Officer
  • Inspector
  • Sub-Inspector
  • Assistant Enforcement Officer
  • Junior Statistical Officer
  • Statistical Investigator Grade II
  • Assistant Audit Officer
  • Assistant Accounts Officer

Candidates must note that relaxation is always calculated from the upper age limit of the post, not from a general 32-year ceiling.

SSC CGL Qualification 2026

The SSC CGL qualification required for most posts is a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university. Candidates from any stream such as BA, B.Com, B.Sc, B.Tech, BBA, or other equivalent degree programs can apply for most SSC CGL posts.

Candidates must be graduates from a recognized university or institution, while some posts require special subjects such as Statistics, Mathematics, or Commerce.

SSC CGL Educational Qualification 2026

For almost 90% of the posts in SSC CGL, candidates need a Bachelor’s Degree in any stream from a recognized university. You only need to be a graduate. There is no demand for a high percentage for general posts.

However, some posts require special subject combinations. Candidates must check these requirements carefully before choosing post preferences.

SSC CGL Qualification Post Wise 2026

Post

Required SSC CGL Qualification

All General Posts

Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university

Junior Statistical Officer

Bachelor’s degree with at least 60% marks in Mathematics in Class 12 OR Statistics as a subject in graduation

Statistical Investigator Grade II

Bachelor’s degree with Statistics as a core subject in all years or semesters

Assistant Audit Officer / Assistant Accounts Officer

Bachelor’s degree required; CA, MBA Finance, M.Com, or related qualification is desirable but not compulsory

Junior Statistical Officer Qualification

To apply for Junior Statistical Officer, candidates need a Bachelor’s Degree in any subject, but with one of the following conditions:

  • You must have scored at least 60% marks in Mathematics in Class 12.
  • Or, you must have studied Statistics as a subject in graduation.

This is one of the most important SSC CGL qualification rules because many candidates apply for JSO without checking the subject-specific eligibility.

Statistical Investigator Grade II Qualification

For Statistical Investigator Grade II, candidates need a Bachelor’s Degree in any subject, but Statistics must be a core subject studied in all three years or all six semesters of graduation.

Candidates who do not meet this Statistics requirement should avoid choosing this post in their preference list.

Assistant Audit Officer and Assistant Accounts Officer Qualification

For Assistant Audit Officer and Assistant Accounts Officer, the basic requirement is a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized university.

However, the following qualifications are considered desirable:

  • Chartered Accountant
  • Cost and Management Accountant
  • Company Secretary
  • M.Com
  • MBA Finance
  • Masters in Business Studies
  • Masters in Business Economics

These qualifications can strengthen your profile, but they are not compulsory for applying.

SSC CGL Nationality Criteria

To be eligible for SSC CGL 2026, a candidate must be one of the following:

  • A citizen of India
  • A subject of Nepal
  • A subject of Bhutan
  • A Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India
  • A person of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India

Candidates who are not Indian citizens but fall under permitted nationality categories must produce a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India before appointment.

SSC CGL Number of Attempts 2026

There is no fixed limit on the number of attempts in SSC CGL. Candidates can appear for the exam as many times as they want, provided they meet the SSC CGL age limit for the post they are applying for.

This means your eligibility depends more on age, qualification, nationality, and post-specific conditions than on the number of attempts.

SSC CGL Physical Eligibility Criteria

Physical standards in SSC CGL are not applicable to all posts. They are required only for specific posts that involve field duties, mainly Inspector and Sub-Inspector posts.

SSC has clearly mentioned that posts such as Inspector, Sub-Inspector, and other enforcement-related posts may have physical standards, physical tests, and medical standards. Candidates must fulfill these requirements before selecting such posts.

If you are applying only for clerical or administrative posts like Tax Assistant, UDC, or Accountant, you usually do not need to meet physical standards.

Physical Standards for Inspector Posts

The following standards apply to candidates applying for Inspector posts such as Inspector Central Excise, Inspector Examiner, Inspector Preventive Officer, and Inspector in CBN.

SSC CGL Physical Fitness Test

Candidates shortlisted for posts with physical standards must appear for a Physical Fitness Test after the merit list is prepared. The Physical Fitness Test is qualifying in nature and does not carry marks.

Candidates who fail to meet the physical standards or fail the fitness test are not allocated those posts, even if they clear the written exam with a good score.

SSC also states that physical and medical standards are checked by user departments after declaration of result, and candidates should confirm eligibility before giving post preferences.

SSC CGL Eligibility for PwBD Candidates

Persons with Benchmark Disabilities can apply for SSC CGL 2026, subject to post-wise eligibility conditions. SSC specifies which disability categories are allowed for which posts in the official notification.

PwBD candidates must check the following points:

  • PwBD General candidates get 10 years of age relaxation.
  • PwBD OBC candidates get 13 years of age relaxation.
  • PwBD SC/ST candidates get 15 years of age relaxation.
  • Some Inspector and Sub-Inspector posts may not be suitable for certain disability categories.
  • SSC provides scribe facility and compensatory time for eligible PwBD candidates.
  • A valid disability certificate from a competent medical authority is mandatory.

Candidates with visual impairment, hearing impairment, locomotor disabilities, and multiple disabilities may be eligible for specific posts depending on the functional requirements of those posts.

Documents Required to Prove SSC CGL Eligibility

Candidates must keep the following documents ready for verification:

Why It Is Required

Class 10 certificate

PwBD certificate

Ex-Servicemen certificate

To claim ESM relaxation

Government-issued ID proof

To verify identity

SSC guidelines clearly state that certificates related to educational qualification, caste, category, and eligibility are checked during document verification.

Common Mistakes Candidates Make About SSC CGL Eligibility

Understanding the eligibility criteria is one thing. Applying it correctly while filling out the form is another. These are the most common mistakes candidates make.

Not Checking Post-Wise Age Limits

Most candidates check the general age limit and assume they are eligible. However, if you are targeting a post with an 18–27 age limit and you are 28 years old, you may not be eligible for that post even if you are within the general 32-year bracket.

Assuming Any Graduation Degree Qualifies for All Posts

A general graduation degree is enough for most posts, but not all. If you are applying for JSO or Statistical Investigator Grade II without Statistics or Mathematics eligibility, your candidature may be rejected at document verification.

Applying Without a Valid Category Certificate

Candidates applying under OBC, SC, ST, EWS, PwBD, or Ex-Servicemen categories must possess valid certificates in the format prescribed by the Government of India.

Ignoring Physical Standard Requirements

Candidates targeting Inspector or Sub-Inspector posts must check height, chest, vision, and medical standards before selecting these posts.

Not Accounting for the Cut-Off Date

Age eligibility is calculated as of the cut-off date mentioned in the official notification. It is not calculated from the date of application or exam date.

Final Note

Before applying, candidates must check the official SSC CGL notification and confirm their age, qualification, category certificate, nationality, physical standards, and post-wise eligibility. The safest approach is to verify eligibility before filling out the form, not after clearing the exam.
