RBI imposes penalties on five cooperative banks for rule violation

  • The RBI has fined five cooperative banks for violating various norms and regulations.
  • The banks are SBPP Co-operative Bank, The Sahayadri Sahakari Bank, Rahimatpur Sahakari Bank, The Gadhinglaj Urban Co-operative Bank, and The Kalyan Janata Sahakari Bank.
  • The penalties range from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 13 lakh depending on the nature and severity of the violations.
  • The action is based on the RBI’s inspection of the banks’ financial position and compliance with its directions.

GST Council introduces amnesty scheme for tax appeals and clarifies property attachment rules

  • The GST Council has announced an amnesty scheme to allow taxpayers to file appeals against demand orders issued by tax inspectors until January 31, 2024.
  • The scheme aims to streamline the appeal process and provide relief to taxpayers who were unable to file appeals within the previous time limit of three months.
  • To avail of the scheme, taxpayers have to make a pre-deposit of 12.5 percent of the tax demand, out of which at least 20 percent or 2.5 percent has to be debited from the Electronic Cash Ledger.
  • The GST Council has also clarified that property attachments by tax authorities are valid only for one year, after which they have to be released. This provides clarity and security to taxpayers whose assets are temporarily seized by tax authorities.
  • The GST Council’s decisions are expected to make the GST system more transparent, fair, and taxpayer-friendly.

India hosts annual joint HADR exercise with eight IOR countries

  • The Annual Joint Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Exercise (AJHE) is a multi-agency initiative that started in 2015 to enhance preparedness and response to natural disasters in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
  • The 2023 edition of AJHE, known as CHAKRAVAT, is hosted by the Indian Navy in Goa from October 9th to 11th. It involves the participation of eight countries from the IOR, along with various government agencies, NGOs, academic institutions, and international organizations.
  • The exercise consists of a seminar, a table-top exercise, a multi-agency capability demonstration, and an industrial display. The exercise covers topics such as climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, disaster response in IOR, and NGO collaboration.
  • The exercise is aligned with India’s vision for the oceans, known as SAGAR (Security And Growth for All in the Region), which emphasizes the need for collective and coordinated action to address humanitarian crises and natural disasters in the region.
  • The exercise showcases India’s commitment to be the ‘First Responder’ in the region and its readiness to collaborate with international partners to address the challenges posed by climate change and natural disasters in the IOR.

Bihar Government Announces 10% Reservation for EWS in Judicial Services and Law Education

  • The Bihar cabinet approved a 10% reservation quota for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category in the state’s judicial services and government-run law colleges and universities.

NLC India Ltd Secures 810 MW Solar PV Project In Rajasthan
