SSC CGL Exam Pattern 2025

SSC conducts the SSC CGL exam in two Tiers. It is important to understand how SSC conducts the exams, including the sections, number of questions, total marks, and the time allowed for the exam.

SSC CGL Tier 1 Exam Pattern

The Tier 1 exam is only for qualifying (clearing) to the next stage. It has four sections, a total of 100 questions, and you get 60 minutes (1 hour) to finish the exam.

The Tier 2 exam is the second stage and determines your final merit (rank). It has two sessions. Paper I is mandatory for all posts. Paper II is only for candidates who apply for the Junior Statistical Officer (JSO) post.

English Language and Comprehension Syllabus (Section II-A)

This is one of the highest-scoring sections. Below are the topics included in the English Language section:

  • Grammar and Vocabulary: Spotting Errors, Fill in the Blanks, Synonyms and Antonyms, Homonyms, Idioms and Phrases, One Word Substitution, Sentence Improvement, Active and Passive Voice, Direct and Indirect Speech, Spellings.
  • Reading Comprehension: Passages and Questions (can be based on simple text, current affairs, or a report/editorial), Cloze Test.
  • Sentence Structure: Sentence Completion, Para Jumbles.

General Awareness Syllabus (Section II-B)

The syllabus for the Tier 2 general awareness exam is not much different from the Tier 1 exam. The questions will be more advanced than those in the Tier 1 exam.

Computer Knowledge Syllabus (Section III)

This is a new section for Tier 2. You must prepare for it from the start.

  • Computer Basics: Computer organization, CPU, Input/Output devices, computer memory, memory organization, backup devices, PORTs, Windows Explorer, Keyboard shortcuts.
  • Software: Windows Operating system, including the basics of Microsoft Office (MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Working with the Internet and e-mails: Web Browsing and searching, Downloading and uploading, Managing an E-mail Account, e-banking.
  • Basics of Networking and Cybersecurity: Networking devices and protocols, Network and information security threats (such as hacking, viruses, worms, Trojans), and preventive measures.

Statistics Syllabus (Paper II - Only for JSO Post)

This specialized paper is for candidates who have applied for the Junior Statistical Officer (JSO) post.

  • Data Handling: Collecting, classifying, and showing statistical data (Primary/Secondary data, tabulation, graphs, frequency distributions).
  • Averages & Measures: Common measures of Central Tendency (mean, median, mode, quartiles) and Measures of Dispersion (range, standard deviation).
  • Moments, Skewness, and Kurtosis: Understanding different types of moments, the meaning and measures of skewness (asymmetry) and kurtosis (peakiness).
  • Correlation and Regression: Simple correlation (relationship) and regression (predicting), including rank correlation.
