Why is Arithmetic Important for SSC GD?
In the SSC GD exam, the Math section has 20 questions (40 marks). Almost 80% to 90% of these questions come from Arithmetic topics.
- It is Scoring: If you know the basic concept, you will definitely get the right answer. There is no confusion like in General Knowledge.
- Easy Level: The syllabus is of “Matriculation Level” (Class 10). The questions are direct and simple.
- Selection Decider: Most students ignore Math. If you practice Arithmetic well, your score will be higher than thousands of other students.
SSC GD Arithmetic: Important Topics
You don’t need to study the whole math book. Focus on these chapters that appear in every shift:

You can download it for free, and you are strongly advised to solve these questions and analyze the level of the exam.
Q1. If 20% of a number is 120, what is 120% of that number?
(a) 360
(b) 720
(c) 600
(d) 480
Answer: (b) 720
(Logic: 20% = 120. So 1% = 6. Then 120% = 120 × 6 = 720.)
Q2. Ram buys a toy for ₹500 and sells it for ₹600. What is his profit percentage?
(a) 10%
(b) 15%
(c) 20%
(d) 25%
Answer: (c) 20%
(Logic: Profit = 600 – 500 = 100. Profit % = (100/500) × 100 = 20%.)
Q3. The ratio of boys and girls in a class is 3:2. If there are 30 boys, how many girls are there?
(a) 10
(b) 15
(c) 20
(d) 25
Answer: (c) 20
(Logic: 3 units = 30 boys. So 1 unit = 10. Girls = 2 units = 2 × 10 = 20.)
Q4. The average weight of 5 friends is 50 kg. If a new friend weighing 62 kg joins them, what is the new average?
(a) 51 kg
(b) 52 kg
(c) 53 kg
(d) 55 kg
Answer: (b) 52 kg
(Logic: Total weight was 5×50 = 250. New total = 250+62 = 312. New average = 312 / 6 = 52 kg.)
Q5. A can finish a work in 10 days and B can do it in 15 days. Working together, in how many days will they finish it?
(a) 5 days
(b) 6 days
(c) 8 days
(d) 12 days
Answer: (b) 6 days
(Logic: Formula (A x B)/(A + B) = (10 x 15)/(10 + 15) = 150/25 = 6)
Q6. A car travels at a speed of 45 km/hr. How much distance will it cover in 4 hours?
(a) 150 km
(b) 160 km
(c) 180 km
(d) 200 km
Answer: (c) 180 km
(Logic: Distance = Speed × Time = 45 × 4 = 180 km.)
Q7. Find the Simple Interest on ₹5000 for 2 years at 10% per annum.
(a) ₹500
(b) ₹800
(c) ₹1000
(d) ₹1200
Answer: (c) ₹1000
(Logic: SI = (P x R x T)/100, (5000 x 10 x 2)/100 = 1000)
Q8. The Marked Price of a shirt is ₹1000. The shopkeeper gives a discount of 10%. What is the Selling Price?
(a) ₹800
(b) ₹850
(c) ₹900
(d) ₹950
Answer: (c) ₹900
(Logic: 10% of 1000 is 100. Selling Price = 1000 – 100 = 900.)
Q9. What is the LCM of 12 and 18?
(a) 24
(b) 30
(c) 36
(d) 48
Answer: (c) 36
(Logic: 36 is the smallest number that comes in the table of both 12 and 18.)
Q10. A sum of money doubles itself in 5 years at Simple Interest. In how many years will it become 3 times?
(a) 8 years
(b) 10 years
(c) 12 years
(d) 15 years
Answer: (b) 10 years
(Logic: To double, it earns interest equal to Principal (P) in 5 years. To become 3 times, it needs an interest of 2P. So, time = 5 × 2 = 10 years.)
How to Prepare for Arithmetic for SSC GD Easily?
Math is not about reading; it is about practice. Most candidates try to understand the solution and think that they have learned enough. But in reality, when they sit down to solve questions, they fail to solve them quickly and correctly. Here are some simple tips to help you master Arithmetic for the SSC GD 2025 exam.
- Learn the Tables: Memorize multiplication tables from 1 to 20. This is the biggest secret to speed. If you know that 12 x 5 = 60 instantly, you save time.
- Understand Fractions: Learn that 50% = 1/2, 25% = 1/4, and 20% = 1/5. This helps you solve Percentage and Profit & Loss questions without using pen and paper.
- Start with Easy Topics: Don’t start with Compound Interest. Start with ratios or averages. These are easy and give you confidence.
- Read the Question Carefully: In SSC GD, questions are tricky but easy. Sometimes they ask for “Loss %,” but you calculate “Profit %”. Read carefully.
- Practice Through Mock Tests: Solving one question at a time is different from solving a test. Attempt our Free Topic Tests to check your speed.
