Quantitative Aptitude (Basic Arithmetic Skills) Tips for SSC CHSL Tier I

As you must have noticed from the exam pattern of SSC CHSL 2023 Tier I, Quantitative Aptitude (Basic Arithmetic Skills) has 25 questions which is ¼ of the total questions. You should note that to get good marks in this section you need to do a lot of practice. With a good score in this section, you can easily clear this exam and move to the next tier of SSC CHSL exam. Let’s now have a look at Quantitative Aptitude (Basic Arithmetic Skills).

When practising quantitative aptitude questions, try doing the calculation in your mind itself. The more calculations you do in your mind, the more time you save for other questions. To do calculations in your mind, when sitting idle, do some number crunching. For example, take today’s date (15.02.23) and try finding out the fraction/decimal value of date/year (15/23). These small steps will go a long way in helping you to solve more questions in the quantitative aptitude section.

In the quantitative aptitude section, there will be a mix of easy, moderate & difficult questions. You need to filter the easy & moderate questions first, solve those questions and secure their marks. Then if time is still there, you can try solving difficult questions. The art of filtering easy & moderate questions comes only through practice. The more questions you solve in your practising sessions, the more you will be comfortable in identifying if a question is easy, moderate or difficult. Please remember that solving easy & moderate questions first will help you maximize your score in this section.

When attempting a question, ensure that you don’t give more than 50 seconds to 1 minute to a single question. If any question is taking more than this duration, it is better to check out other questions.

You should attempt at least 21-23 questions with around 90% accuracy in this section. If you are able to do this and you do well in other sections it’s likely that you will be able to clear the overall cut-off. Take a Free Mock Test of SSC CHSL 2023 Tier I now and check out yourself how well are you able to perform in the quantitative aptitude section.

Don’t make any guesses while answering the questions. If you are not sure of any question, it is better to skip that question than make any guesses. Please note that a negative marking of 0.50 mark per incorrectly answered question is there.

Questions from topics like Simple Interest/Compound Interest, Simplification, Problems on Ages, Averages, Percentage, Ratio & Proportions and Profit and Loss are generally considered easy by SSC aspirants. It’s recommended that you solve questions on these topics first before moving to questions on other topics. That said if any question from any of these topics is taking more than 50 seconds to 1 minute, you can skip it.

Make your own notes of the important formulae of different topics (like mensuration) of quantitative aptitude section and keep revising them on a daily basis.

Solve as many previous years’ questions as possible. If you get stuck in any of the previous years’ questions, take your time to understand the topic and solve the question. Understand where is the knowledge gap and get to understand the conceptual knowledge of the topic.

The importance of mock tests is immense while practising quantitative aptitude questions. Check how many questions are you able to answer in this section within the given time limit. Keep taking mock tests to keep a track of your performance.
