What is an Alphanumeric Series?

An Alphanumeric Series is a sequence that includes a combination of letters from A to Z and numbers from 0 to 9, and special symbols such as @, #, $, %, &, etc.

These characters are arranged in a pattern, and you’re asked to identify relationships, positions, or missing terms based on logical rules.

Example of a typical series: A 5 @ B 9 C # 3 D %

Types of Questions asked from the alphanumeric series in RRB Clerk Exam

Step-by-Step approach to solve the Alphanumeric Series Questions

In this section, we are discussing the step-by-step approach to solving the alphanumeric series. Use these steps to solve the questions in a shorter time period.

  • Avoid reading each element slowly. Observe the pattern as a whole and mentally group alphabet, numbers, and symbols. It may not happen on the first go, but eventually you’ll be able to observe the patterns very quickly.
  • For complex series, note down positions like 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. This prevents confusion during right/left-based questions.
  • Many questions are designed with distractions. Identify only the required portion of the series to avoid wasting time in decoding the whole series.
  • “If all letters are replaced by the next letters in the alphabet.” This is a type of pattern that you can frequently observe in RRB exams. Practise such variations daily.
  • Time yourself when solving Alphanumeric Series sets. A good benchmark is to solve 5 questions within 2 minutes. You may not be able to solve this many questions in the very first practice, but eventually, after some sessions, you will be able to do so.
