Preparing for the RRB NTPC exam? You already know that the competition is tough. To secure a seat in the Indian Railways, you need to grab every single mark you can. In the General Intelligence and Reasoning section, there is one topic that looks very easy but requires a lot of practice, which is classification. It is also known as “Odd One Out.” You might think, “Picking the odd one out is so simple, why do I need to study it?” Here is the reality: RRB NTPC asks tricky questions where the logic isn’t always obvious. Sometimes it’s based on Science, sometimes on Squares/Cubes, and sometimes on General Knowledge. If you practice the right logic, this topic can give you 2-3 marks in seconds. In this blog, we have provided a free PDF of classification questions for RRB NTPC.
What is Classification? Why is it Important?
In simple words, Classification means “Finding the Stranger.” The examiner gives you four options. Three of them share a common quality or follow the same rule, but one does not. Your job is to find that “Odd One Out.”
Why focus on this topic?
- It’s a Time Saver: You don’t need to calculate long formulas. You either know the logic, or you don’t.
- High Frequency: You will find at least 2 to 3 questions in every shift of CBT-1 and CBT-2.
- No Rough Work: Most of these questions can be solved just by looking at the screen.
Important Types of Classification Questions
The logic can come from anywhere. Here are the three main types you must prepare:
| Type | Example Logic |
| Word Classification | Based on GK (Capitals, Animals, Science). Ex: Apple, Mango, Potato, Banana. (Ans: Potato – it’s a vegetable) |
| Number Classification | Based on Math (Squares, Cubes, Prime Numbers). Ex: 4, 9, 16, 20. (Ans: 20 – others are squares) |
| Letter Classification | Based on Alphabet positions. Ex: AZ, BY, CX, DV. (Ans: DV – others are opposite pairs) |

(a) 8 – 27
(b) 64 – 125
(c) 216 – 343
(d) 49 – 81
Answer: (d) 49 – 81
(Logic: In all other options, the numbers are perfect cubes (2^3-3^3, 4^3-5^3). In (d), they are squares (7^2-9^2)
Q3. Select the odd letters from the given alternatives.
(a) ACE
(b) GIK
(c) MOQ
(d) WYZ
Answer: (d) WYZ
(Logic: +2 gap pattern. A(+2)C(+2)E. W(+2)Y(+1)Z. So, WYZ is the odd one.)
Q4. Find the odd word.
(a) Rupee
(b) Yen
(c) Dollar
(d) Currency

(a) 29
(b) 31

(a) Car : Road

(a) Veena
(b) Guitar
(c) Flute
(d) Violin
Answer: (c) Flute
(Logic: Veena, Guitar, and Violin are string instruments. A flute is a wind instrument.)
How to Prepare Classification for RRB NTPC?
You might feel this topic is too random. But with a smart approach, you can master it. Here are some simple tips:
- Brush Up Your GK: As you saw in the examples, many questions are based on Science (Organs), Geography (Currencies), or Music. If you study General Awareness well, your Reasoning score automatically improves.
- Learn Squares & Primes: For Number Classification, always check for Prime Numbers first. Then check for Squares and Cubes. 90% of the number questions are based on these two logics.
- Memorize Alphabet Opposites: Write down A-Z and Z-A. Recognizing pairs like ‘G-T’ (G.T. Road) or ‘H-S’ (High School) instantly helps you spot the odd one out in letter questions.
- Don’t Overthink: Classification questions usually have a simple logic. If you are thinking too deeply or using complex formulas, you are probably on the wrong track. Look for the most obvious difference.
- Practice with Our Topic Tests: Reading is passive; solving is active. Attempt 15-20 questions daily using our Free Topic Tests. It helps your brain recognize patterns faster.
