Tips to Answer Reading Comprehension Questions Accurately
Below are the 10 tips to answer the RC questions accurately in the SBI PO exam:
1. Read the Questions First (for Prelims)
- Skim the questions before reading the passage.
- This gives you a focus and you’ll know what information to look for.
- Best for fact-based or vocab questions.
Note: Use this in Prelims when time is limited and passages are short.
2. Read the Passage Carefully (for Mains)
- For Mains, read the passage first to understand the overall theme, tone, and flow.
- Take mental notes of paragraph transitions and main ideas.
3. Focus on Keywords
- Underline or note keywords like but, however, although, because, therefore.
- These indicate contrasts, conclusions, or causes — very useful for inference questions.
4. Use Elimination Method
- Eliminate options that are too extreme, out of scope, or contradict the passage.
- If two options seem close, prefer the one that aligns most closely with the author’s tone or logic.
5. Don’t Assume – Stick to the Passage
- Never answer based on your own knowledge or assumptions.
- All answers must be backed by information in the passage.
6. Be Aware of Trap Words
- SBI often uses tricky answer choices with one or two keywords that appear in the passage but distort the context.
- Match the entire meaning, not just phrases.
7. Practice Tone & Theme Identification
- Practice identifying tones like critical, sarcastic, analytical, optimistic, neutral.
- Helps in questions like “What is the author’s attitude toward…?”
8. Handle Vocab-in-Context Smartly
- Replace the word in the passage with each option.
- Pick the one that makes sense contextually, not just as a dictionary meaning.
9. Avoid Overthinking Inference Questions
- Choose the answer that is logically derived from the passage—not a wild guess or new assumption.
10. Don’t Spend Too Much Time on One Question
- If stuck, mark the question, and move on.
- Come back after finishing the easier ones.
