Tips to Solve Number Series Questions
1. Observe Differences Between Terms
- Always start by checking the difference between consecutive numbers.
- If differences are not constant, check second-level or third-level differences.
- Example:
Series: 38, 45, 53, 62…
→ +7, +8, +9… (Pattern is increasing by +1)
2. Check for Multiplication or Division Patterns
- If the numbers are increasing/decreasing rapidly, look for multiplication or division.
- Use this, especially in larger jumps between numbers (e.g., 22 → 66 → 231).
3. Try Alternate Terms
- Sometimes the pattern follows an alternate number logic (odd terms follow one rule, even terms another).
- Example:
- 17, 17, 19, 31…
Check 1st, 3rd, 5th → a different rule than 2nd, 4th, 6th.
- 17, 17, 19, 31…
4. Use Square, Cube, Prime, or Factorial Clues
- Many number series use mathematical patterns like:
- Squares: 4, 9, 16, 25…
- Cubes: 1, 8, 27…
- Primes: 2, 3, 5, 7…
- Factorials: 1, 2, 6, 24…
- Squares: 4, 9, 16, 25…
5. Write Down Steps Clearly
- Keep track of what you tried: +, –, ×, ÷
- If stuck, move to the next question and come back.
