Are you targeting the SSC CHSL exam? If yes, then you know that the level of the exam can be difficult if you do not focus on the most scoring topics. Arithmetic is one of the most scoring topics of the SSC CHSL exam. This is basic math related to money, work, time, and speed—things we use in daily life. If you master Arithmetic, you can easily score 25-30 marks in the Quant section without stressing about advanced Geometry or Trigonometry. To help you practice, we have analyzed previous CHSL papers and compiled the most repeated SSC CHSL Arithmetic questions into a free PDF. You can download it from this blog.

Why is Arithmetic Important for SSC CHSL?

Most candidates don’t focus on arithmetic, which can be a big mistake. Here are the reasons why you should focus on arithmetic.

  • Huge Weightage: Out of 25 questions, you can expect 10 to 12 questions purely from the Arithmetic topics.
  • Easy to Understand: Topics like Profit & Loss or Time & Work rely on logic, not memorizing 100 theorems.
  • High Accuracy: In English or GK, you might get confused. But in Arithmetic, if your calculation is right, your marks are 100% secured.

Important Arithmetic Topics for SSC CHSL

You don’t need to study everything at once. Focus on these chapters first:

  1. Percentage & Profit Loss: The most asked topic.
  2. Ratio & Proportion: The base for all other chapters.
  3. Simple & Compound Interest: Formula-based and scoring.
  4. Time & Work: Questions on efficiency and pipes.
  5. Speed, Time & Distance: Trains and Boat problems.
  6. Average: Weights and Age problems.

Q1. Profit and Loss

A shopkeeper sells an item for ₹450 at a loss of 10%. At what price should he sell it to gain 10%?
Options:
(a) ₹500
(b) ₹550
(c) ₹600
(d) ₹540

Answer: (b) ₹550
Logic:
Selling Price at 10% loss = 90% of Cost Price
90% = 450 → 1% = 5
For 10% gain, SP = 110% = 110 × 5 = ₹550

Q2. Time and Work

A and B can do a work in 12 days and 16 days respectively. If they work together, in how many days will they finish the work?
Options:
(a) 6 days
(b) 6.85 days
(c) 7 days
(d) 8 days

Answer: (b) 6.85 days
Logic:
Total Work = LCM of 12 and 16 = 48 units
A’s speed = 48/12 = 4 units/day
B’s speed = 48/16 = 3 units/day
Total speed = 7 units/day
Time = 48 ÷ 7 ≈ 6.85 days

Q3. Average

The average weight of 10 students increases by 0.5 kg when one student of 50 kg is replaced. Find the weight of the new student.
Options:
(a) 55 kg
(b) 60 kg
(c) 65 kg
(d) 52 kg

Answer: (a) 55 kg
Logic:
Increase in total weight = 10 × 0.5 = 5 kg
New student is 5 kg heavier
Weight = 50 + 5 = 55 kg

Q4. Ratio and LCM

The ratio of two numbers is 3 : 4 and their LCM is 120. Find their sum.
Options:
(a) 70
(b) 140
(c) 35
(d) 105

Answer: (a) 70
Logic:
Let numbers be 3x and 4x
LCM = 12x = 120 → x = 10
Numbers = 30 and 40
Sum = 70

Q5. Train and Speed

A train 150 m long runs at a speed of 54 km/hr. Time taken to cross a pole is:
Options:
(a) 8 sec
(b) 10 sec
(c) 12 sec
(d) 15 sec

Answer: (b) 10 sec
Logic:
Speed = 54 × 5/18 = 15 m/s
Time = Distance ÷ Speed = 150 ÷ 15 = 10 sec

Q6. Simple and Compound Interest

The difference between CI and SI for 2 years at 10% per annum is ₹20. Find the principal.
Options:
(a) ₹1000
(b) ₹1500
(c) ₹2000
(d) ₹2500

Answer: (c) ₹2000
Logic:
Difference = P(R/100)²
20 = P(10/100)²
20 = P × 1/100
P = 2000

Q7. Percentage

If A’s income is 25% more than B’s income, then B’s income is less than A’s income by:
Options:
(a) 25%
(b) 20%
(c) 16.66%
(d) 33.33%

Answer: (b) 20%
Logic:
Let B = 100 → A = 125
Difference = 25
Percentage = (25/125) × 100 = 20%

Q8. Mixture

A mixture contains milk and water in the ratio 5 : 1. On adding 5 liters of water, the ratio becomes 5 : 2. Find the quantity of milk.
Options:
(a) 15 liters
(b) 20 liters
(c) 25 liters
(d) 30 liters

Answer: (c) 25 liters
Logic:
Milk remains constant (5 units)
Water increases by 1 unit = 5 liters
Milk = 5 units = 5 × 5 = 25 liters

Q9. Discount

Successive discounts of 20% and 10% are equal to a single discount of:
Options:
(a) 30%
(b) 28%
(c) 25%
(d) 32%

Answer: (b) 28%
Logic:
Single Discount = A + B − (A×B)/100
= 20 + 10 − 2 = 28%

Q10. Profit and Loss

By selling 12 oranges for ₹60, a man loses 25%. How many oranges should he sell for ₹100 to gain 25%?
Options:
(a) 10
(b) 11
(c) 12
(d) 15

Answer: (c) 12
Logic:
SP of 1 orange = ₹5 (75% of CP)
CP = 5 ÷ 0.75 = 20/3
New SP at 25% gain = (20/3) × 1.25 = 25/3
Number of oranges = 100 ÷ (25/3) = 12

How to Prepare Arithmetic Questions Easily?

Math is not about magic; it’s about understanding method and practice. Below are some tips that will help you solve arithmetic questions easily.

  • Learn Tables and Squares: Memorize multiplication tables up to 20 and squares up to 30. This small step will double your calculation speed.
  • Focus on Fractions: Learn the fraction values of percentages (e.g., 16.66% = 1/6, 12.5% = 1/8). This makes Profit & Loss questions very easy.
  • Don’t Use ‘X’: Try to solve questions using the “Unitary Method” (100 units or 1 unit) instead of assuming ‘x’. It saves time.
  • Practice with Mock Tests: Reading is not enough. You must solve. Attempt our Free Topic Tests to see if you can solve these questions under time pressure.
