Do you dream of wearing the uniform of BSF, CRPF, or CISF and serving the nation? The SSC GD Constable exam is the first step towards this goal. But for many students, Mathematics becomes a big problem. Most candidates fail to pass this exam just because of scoring low marks in this section. To solve this problem, we have provided questions on one of the most scoring topics that is ratio and proportion. Ratio and Proportion is the easiest and most important topic, based on simple daily life logic, not tough formulas. In this blog, we have provided a free PDF of exam-level ratio and proportion questions for SSC GD exam.
Why is Ratio & Proportion Important for SSC GD?
In the Elementary Mathematics section (20 questions), this topic is a game-changer.
- High Weightage: You will definitely see 2 to 3 questions directly from Ratio.
- Base for Other Topics: If you learn Ratio, you automatically cover 40% of the Math syllabus (Profit & Loss, SI/CI, Time & Work).
- Option Elimination: Many Ratio questions can be solved in 5 seconds just by checking which option is divisible by the given ratio numbers. No pen needed!
Understanding the Concept (In Simple Words)
- Ratio (A: B): It is just a comparison. If Ram has ₹200 and Shyam has ₹300, the ratio is 2:3.
- Proportion (A:B:: C:D): It means two ratios are equal.
- Mean Proportional: Formula is √(a x b).
- Third Proportional: Formula is b2 / a.

We have prepared a comprehensive PDF containing exam-level questions. We have chosen questions that are exactly of the “Matriculation Level” (Class 10)—not too hard, not too easy. Download it, save it, and practice these questions to build your confidence.
Q1. If A : B = 3 : 4 and B : C = 5 : 7, then find A : B : C.
(a) 15 : 20 : 28
(b) 15 : 20 : 21
(c) 3 : 4 : 7
(d) 12 : 15 : 28
Answer: (a) 15 : 20 : 28
Logic: Make B common.
Multiply first ratio by 5 → 15 : 20
Multiply second ratio by 4 → 20 : 28
So, A : B : C = 15 : 20 : 28
Q2. Find the Fourth Proportional to 5, 8, 15.
(a) 18
(b) 24
(c) 20
(d) 21
Answer: (b) 24
Logic:
5 : 8 :: 15 : x
Product of means = Product of extremes
8 × 15 = 5 × x
120 = 5x
x = 24
Q3. The Third Proportional to 9 and 15 is:
(a) 20
(b) 25
(c) 30
(d) 27
Answer: (b) 25
Logic:
Third proportional = b² / a
= (15 × 15) / 9
= 225 / 9
= 25
Q4. A sum of ₹2100 is divided among A, B, and C in the ratio 2 : 3 : 5. Find the share of B.
(a) ₹630
(b) ₹600
(c) ₹500
(d) ₹700
Answer: (a) ₹630
Logic:
Total units = 2 + 3 + 5 = 10
Value of 1 unit = 2100 / 10 = 210
B’s share = 3 × 210 = ₹630
Q5. Find the Mean Proportional between 9 and 25.
(a) 12
(b) 15
(c) 14
(d) 16
Answer: (b) 15
Logic:
Mean proportional = √(a × b)
= √(9 × 25)
= √225
= 15
Q6. If 2A = 3B = 4C, find A : B : C.
(a) 2 : 3 : 4
(b) 4 : 3 : 2
(c) 6 : 4 : 3
(d) 3 : 4 : 6
Answer: (c) 6 : 4 : 3
Logic (Hide and Seek Method):
Hide A → 3 × 4 = 12
Hide B → 2 × 4 = 8
Hide C → 2 × 3 = 6
Ratio = 12 : 8 : 6
Simplify = 6 : 4 : 3
Q7. A bag contains ₹1, 50p, and 25p coins in the ratio 2 : 3 : 4. If the total value is ₹180, find the number of 50p coins.
(a) 120
(b) 150
(c) 90
(d) 60
Answer: (a) 120
Logic:
Value ratio = (2 × 1) : (3 × 0.5) : (4 × 0.25)
= 2 : 1.5 : 1
Total value units = 4.5
4.5x = 180
x = 40
Number of 50p coins = 3x = 3 × 40 = 120
Q8. Two numbers are in the ratio 5 : 7. If 9 is subtracted from each, they become 7 : 11. Find the difference between the numbers.
(a) 6
(b) 12
(c) 15
(d) 18
Answer: (b) 12
Logic (Gap Method):
Initial ratio = 5 : 7 (gap = 2)
New ratio = 7 : 11 (gap = 4)
Multiply first ratio by 2 → 10 : 14
10 → 7 = decrease of 3 units
3 units = 9
1 unit = 3
Difference = 4 units = 4 × 3 = 12
Q9. The ratio of boys and girls in a class is 4 : 5. If there are 20 boys, find the number of girls.
(a) 20
(b) 25
(c) 30
(d) 15
Answer: (b) 25
Logic:
4 units = 20 boys
1 unit = 5
Girls = 5 units = 5 × 5 = 25
Q10. The ratio of income of A and B is 3 : 2 and their expenditure is 4 : 3. If they save ₹2000 and ₹900 respectively, find their income.
(a) ₹2400, ₹1600
(b) ₹7200, ₹4800
(c) ₹6000, ₹4000
(d) ₹3000, ₹2000
Answer: (b) ₹7200, ₹4800
Logic:
Income ratio = 3 : 2
Expenditure ratio = 4 : 3
Savings = Income − Expenditure
1 unit = (3 × 2000 − 4 × 900)
= 6000 − 3600
= 2400
Income of A = 3 × 2400 = ₹7200
Income of B = 2 × 2400 = ₹4800
How to Prepare Ratio Questions Easily?
Don’t let the fear of math stop you. Follow these simple tips:
- Check the Options: If the question asks for “B’s share” and B’s ratio is 3, the answer must be divisible by 3. Check the options before you calculate!
- Learn the Formulas: Memorize the formulas for Mean Proportional √(axb) and Third Proportional (b2/a). SSC GD asks these every year.
- The “Hide” Trick: For questions like 2A = 3B = 4C, just cover the letter you want to find and multiply the other numbers. It saves time.
- Practice with Topic Tests: Reading is not enough. You must calculate. Attempt our Free Topic Tests to increase your speed.
