Suppose you and your two friends order a pizza, and the amounts split among you three are 200 Rs, 300 Rs, and 500 Rs. Now, how would you split the pizza among the three? That’s where ratio and proportions comes in handy. Whether you are splitting bills or mixing fuels for better vehicle performance, you practice ratio and proportion in everyday life. Similarly, in IBPS PO exams, ratios and proportions play a crucial role. The only difference is that in the exam hall, there is a time limit under which you have to solve certain questions, and in real life, there are no such conditions. Sometimes questions are asked directly, or sometimes they are combined with data interpretation and many other quantitative topics. So if you master the IBPS PO ratio and proportion questions, then you will be able to score well in the Quants section.
Why Is Ratio & Proportion Important in IBPS PO?
As already mentioned above, this is one of the most important topics, as it comes under the arithmetic topics, and not only this, they are also combinedly asked in other topics, such as time and work, partnership, mixture, and alligation, etc. If you master the core principles, then you will be able to score well.
Key Concepts You Should Know
In ratio and proportion, certain key concepts are there that you need to master for a better and core understanding. In the table below, all the important concepts are explained.
| Concept | Explanation |
| Ratio | A ratio is a way to compare two quantities. E.g.: 3:5 means 3 parts to 5 parts |
| Proportion | It shows that the two ratios are equal. Eg: 3:5 = 6:10 |
| Mean Proportion | If a: b = b:c, then b is the mean proportion between a and c |
| Continued Proportion | If a/b = b/c, then a, b, and c are in continued proportion |
| Compounded Ratio | When multiple ratios are multiplied together. Eg: (2:3) × (4:5) = 8:15 |
| Inverse Ratio | Reciprocal of the given ratio. Eg: If A:B = 3:5, then inverse is 5:3 |
Types of IBPS PO Ratio and Proportion Questions
In the table given below, we have given types of ratio and proportion questions asked in IBPS PO exam along with examples.
| Type of Question | Example | Solution | Answer |
| Basic Ratio | The ratio of two numbers is 4:5. Sum is 81. Find the numbers. | Let numbers be 4x and 5x ⇒ 4x+5x=81 ⇒ x=9 ⇒ 4×9=36, 5×9=45 | 36 and 45 |
| Ratio of Shares | ₹1800 is divided among A, B, and C in the ratio 2:3:4. Find B’s share. | Total parts = 2+3+4=9 ⇒ B’s share = (3/9) × ₹1800 = ₹600 | ₹600 |
| Chain/Compound Ratio | A:B = 3:4 and B:C = 2:5. Find A:B:C. | A:B = 3:4 → ×2 ⇒ 6:8; B:C = 2:5 → ×4 ⇒ 8:20 ⇒ A:B:C = 6:8:20 | 6:8:20 |
| Ages Based on Ratio | Ratio of A & B is 5:7; after 4 years becomes 7:9. Find current ages. | Let A = 5x, B = 7x; (5x+4)/(7x+4) = 7/9 ⇒ x = 2 ⇒ A = 10, B = 14 | 10 years and 14 years |
| Time & Work via Ratio | A & B complete work in a ratio of 3:2. Together take 10 days. A alone? | Total efficiency = 3+2 = 5; Total work = 5×10=50; A’s rate = 3 ⇒ 50/3 days | ~16.67 days |
