What Are Quadratic Equations?

A quadratic equation is a mathematical expression in the form:

  ax² + bx + c = 0

Here, a, b, and c are numbers, and x is the unknown variable.

What you have to do is find the values of x that satisfy the equation. These values are also known as the roots of the equation.

Weightage and Importance of Quadratic Equations in RRB Clerk Exam

You will get 4-5 questions on the quadratic equations in the RRB Clerk Prelims exam. This means solving just one small set of these questions correctly can give you a straight 5 marks.

The best part is that these questions are direct, formula-based, and do not involve lengthy calculations. Once you understand how to factor and compare roots, it becomes one of the quickest and most accurate topics to attempt in your paper.

Tips to Solve Quadratic Equation Questions

We are providing some basic and simple tips to solve quadratic equations. Let’s look at some  tips to help you master this topic:

Know the Basic Formula First

The standard form of a quadratic equation is:
  ax² + bx + c = 0

You can solve it in two ways:

  • Factorization method (breaking the middle term)
  • Quadratic formula:
      x = [-b ± √(b² – 4ac)] / 2a
    (You rarely need this in exams, but it’s good to know.)

Practice Breaking the Middle Term

This is the most commonly used method.

Let’s solve:
x² + 5x + 6 = 0

We need to find two numbers that:

  • Multiply by: 6 (i.e., product = +6)
  • Add up to: 5 (i.e., sum = +5)

Let’s check different pairs of factors of 6:

  1. +2 and +3
     Product = 2 × 3 = 6
     Sum = 2 + 3 = 5 Correct
  2. -2 and -3
     Product = (-2) × (-3) = 6
     Sum = -2 + (-3) = -5 Wrong
  3. +1 and +6
     Product = 1 × 6 = 6
     Sum = 1 + 6 = 7 Wrong
  4. -1 and -6
     Product = (-1) × (-6) = 6
     Sum = -1 + (-6) = -7 Wrong

So, the only correct pair is:
+2 and +3

Now split the middle term (5x) using these numbers:
x² + 2x + 3x + 6 = 0

Group and factor:
(x² + 2x) + (3x + 6) = 0
x(x + 2) + 3(x + 2) = 0
(x + 2)(x + 3) = 0

So the roots are:
x = -2 and x = -3

Compare Roots Correctly

Once you solve both x and y equations, compare all possible values.

Example:
x = -2, -3 and y = -1, -4
Now compare:

  • Is x always greater than y?
  • Or sometimes greater and sometimes smaller?

Only then choose the correct option (A to E).

Avoid Silly Mistakes

Always double-check your factorization method, root signs, and comparison if you are comparing values of x and y. Check carefully because a small mistake can make your final answer wrong.

Skip the Tough Ones (if needed)

If you’re not getting a factor easily within 15–20 seconds, skip and move on. You can come back later. Don’t waste time on a tough one and miss out on easy marks elsewhere.

Practice Every Day

Just solve 5–10 quadratic questions daily. In 10 days, you will get the pattern. Most questions repeat similar logic. Practice also helps reduce pressure during the real exam.
