Day-based puzzles are one of the most important topics in the Reasoning section of the IBPS Clerk exam. Nowadays, day-based puzzles test your ability to organise information, analyse situations, and solve them logically in a step-by-step manner. In the IBPS Clerk exam, you can expect around 4 to 5 questions from day-based puzzles. If prepared well, one can score quickly in the exam. In this article, we will understand what day-based puzzles are, their types, and most importantly, how to solve them effectively with examples and strategies.
What are Day-Based Puzzles?
Day-based puzzles are logical reasoning questions where a group of people, activities, or events are associated with different days of the week. Sometimes they are combined with additional variables like months, dates, professions, or hobbies.
You are required to arrange people/events according to the given conditions.
Example Formats:
- Simple Week-Based – Seven friends attend classes on different days (Monday to Sunday).
- Two Weeks Format – Events are scheduled over 14 days (Week 1 and Week 2).
- With Additional Variable – People attend seminars on different days and have different favourite colours.
Why are Day-Based Puzzles Important for IBPS Clerk?
- High weightage: 4–5 questions usually come from puzzles/arrangements.
- Scoring: Once solved correctly, all answers can be marked accurately.
- Time-saving: Compared to sitting arrangement puzzles, these are relatively easier.

Step-by-Step Method to Solve Day-Based Puzzles
Here we are providing a step-by-step strategy to solve day-based puzzle questions. Candidates can follow this strategy to solve puzzle questions quickly.
1. First, you read the Question Carefully
Understand how many people/days are involved. Check if the puzzle is:
- One week (Monday–Sunday)
- Two weeks (Week 1 & Week 2)
- With or without extra variables
Tip: Always underline the keywords like “before”, “after”, “not on”, “exactly two days before”, etc.
2. Draw a Basic Table
Make a table with Days of the Week in rows and Persons/Variables in columns.
Example table for one-week puzzle:
| Day | Person | Variable (if any) |
| Monday | ||
| Tuesday | ||
| Wednesday | ||
| Thursday | ||
| Friday | ||
| Saturday | ||
| Sunday |
3. Place Direct Information First
If a clue says:
- “A attends a seminar on Monday” → Fill directly.
- “B attends a seminar on Friday” → Fill in the table.
This reduces complexity.
4. Handle Indirect Information Next
Clues like:
- “C attends the seminar immediately before D”
- “E attends the seminar two days after F”
These should be placed carefully, leaving possible options.
Keep multiple possibilities in mind until confirmed.
5. Use Elimination Technique
If a clue says “G does not attend on Wednesday or Sunday”, strike out those days from G’s options.
Gradually, only one possible day will remain.
6. Cross-Verify All Conditions
After filling the table, check all conditions to ensure no contradictions.
