Tips to Solve Average Questions Easily

Use the Basic Formula: Average = Total / Number

Always start with this simple rule:
Average = Total Sum ÷ Number of Items

If you are given the average and the number, you can easily find the total.
If you are given the total and the number, you can find the average.

Assume Variables Smartly

In many questions (like Q1 or Q8), you don’t know the total number. In that case, assume unknowns as x, and use average = total/number to form an equation. Example: If boys’ average is 7 and the number is x, then the total = 7x

Use the Difference Method for Faster Calculations

When the average changes due to adding/removing someone (like a teacher), multiply the difference in average by the total number of people to find the person’s age or value quickly.Example: If the average increases by 0.5 for 45 students, the teacher’s age = 45 × 0.5 + the old average

Use Alligation/Ratio for Group Average Problems

When two groups (like boys and girls) with different averages are given, then you can use the alligation method to find the average.

Total = (boys × avg) + (girls × avg)
Then divide by the total students to get the average.

Always Keep Units and Options in Mind

Sometimes, questions look hard but just require one small step or approximation. Check if the question needs an answer in percentage, kg, years, etc. You can round off when options are far apart and values are approximate.
