Types of Alphanumeric Series Questions

Let’s know the types of alphanumeric series mostly asked in the RRB Clerk exam:

1. Letter Series

Only letters are given. You need to find the missing letter using alphabetical order.

Example: B, D, F, ? → The letters go +2 → Answer: H

2. Number Series

Only numbers are given, increasing or decreasing according to a rule.

Example: 3, 6, 9,? → Add 3 → Answer: 12

3. Mixed Series (Most Common)

Letters, numbers, and symbols appear together. You are asked to find the number of letters between two elements, or which item is at a certain position.

Example: A 3 % B 7 D # G
Q: What is the 4th element from the right?
A: 7

4. Symbol-Based Series

Symbols like #, @, %, $, etc., are included. Questions might ask about the position of a symbol or how many symbols are between two elements.

Example: 5 @ B 2 % F
Q: How many symbols are there between 5 and F?
A: 2 symbols (@ and %)

1. Read the Series Carefully

Don’t rush. Read the whole series 2–3 times. Try to see the pattern in letters, numbers, or symbols.

2. Break the Series into Parts

Split the series into small groups of 3–5 elements. It becomes easier to notice changes or rules.

 3. Mark Positions on Paper

If the question is about “5th to the left of” or “3rd from the right”, write the full series and count positions.
