Concepts used to Solve Simplification Questions

In this section, we are providing a list of concepts that you need while doing calculations. Using these concepts while solving the questions enhances the chances of accuracy and speed as well. The topics are listed below-

BODMAS Rule (Brackets, Order, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction)
It defines the correct sequence to perform mathematical operations. Always solve expressions step by step, following this order to get accurate results.

Approximation-based problems

These questions require rounding off numbers to the nearest value for faster calculation. The goal is to find a value close enough to the exact answer within reasonable accuracy.

Fractions and Decimals

Fractions represent parts of a whole, while decimals express the same in base-10 form. Converting between them helps simplify arithmetic operations quickly.

Square and Cube Roots

These help in simplifying numbers raised to powers. Memorising square and cube values up to at least 30 and 20, respectively, boosts speed in calculations.

Percentage-based simplifications

These involve converting percentages into fractional or decimal forms for quick solving. They often appear in profit-loss, interest, and ratio-related questions.

Surds and Indices

Surds deal with irrational roots (like √2, √3), while indices represent powers or exponents. Understanding their laws helps simplify expressions involving roots and powers efficiently.

Common Types of Simplification Questions

In this section, we have discussed the common types of simplification questions that have been asked in the examination.

  1. Pure BODMAS Type:
    Example: 15 + {12 × (8 – 6)} ÷ 3
    → 15 + (12 × 2) ÷ 3 = 15 + 24 ÷ 3 = 23
  2. Mixed Fractions:
    Example: ¾ of 120 + ⅖ of 50
    → 90 + 20 = 110
  3. Square/Cube Roots:
    Example: √144 + ∛27 = 12 + 3 = 15
  4. Percentage-based:
    Example: 20% of 240 + 25% of 320 = 48 + 80 = 128
  5. Approximation-based:
    Example: 49.8 × 2.02 ≈ 50 × 2 = 100

Approach to Solve Simplification Questions in RRB PO Exam 2025

The way or approach you use while solving the questions is very important, as it decides whether you’ll be able to solve the questions and get accurate results or not.

1. Understand the BODMAS Rule

Always perform operations in the correct order:
Brackets → Orders → Division → Multiplication → Addition → Subtraction.
Ignoring this sequence leads to calculation errors.

2. Learn Square and Cube Values

Memorise squares up to 30 and cubes up to 20. It helps simplify large expressions faster without using rough work.

3. Master Fractions and Percentages

Keep common conversions handy:

  • ½ = 50%, ¼ = 25%, ⅓ = 33.33%, ⅕ = 20%, etc.
This allows quick estimation when questions mix fractions and percentages.

4. Approximate When Needed

In approximation-type questions, focus on rounding off numbers smartly. For instance, instead of calculating 49.9 × 20.1, approximate it to 50 × 20 = 1000.
