Types of Direction-Sense Questions

Direction and Distance are one of the easiest and most important topics in the Reasoning section. It is always asked in both Prelims and Mains, and you can easily get 2–5 marks with simple diagram-based logic. Here are the types of questions asked in the exam :

1. Basic Movement Questions

Questions that involve simple movements like “A moves 5m north, then turns right and walks 3m.” You need to find the final position or distance.

2. Relative Direction Questions

These involve left/right turns or facing direction like: “If a person faces east and turns left…” You must know how left/right works from different directions.

3. Distance-Based Questions

A person moves in different directions, and you need to calculate the shortest distance (usually a straight line) from the starting point.

4. Point and Line Questions

Multiple persons or points are placed at different distances and directions. You are asked to find the distance or direction between two of them.

 5. Degree-Based Questions

These involve left/right turns depending on the degree given, like “if a person is moving in the north direction and then moves 90 degrees, then he/she is facing east”

Importance of Direction and Distance in RRB Clerk Exam

Direction and Distance are mostly asked in both Prelims and Mains exams. It checks your spatial understanding, that is, how well you can follow a person’s movement, find the shortest path, identify the final direction or location, and solve related puzzles. One or two well-practiced Direction questions can give you easy marks within seconds, especially when a few months are left.

Tips to Solve Direction and Distance Questions

To solve Direction and Distance questions fast in the exam, follow these practical tips:

1. Learn Direction Basics First

Start by mastering the four cardinal directions (North, South, East, and West) and the four intercardinal directions (NE, NW, SE, and SW). Imagine facing North, then understand how Left and Right change when you turn. Practice facing different directions to understand this quickly.

2. Use a Rough Diagram for Every Question

Even if the question seems easy, always draw arrows and label each step. It reduces confusion and saves time later. For example, if someone walks 4m north and then 3m west, just draw it on paper in real-time.

3. Understand Turns and Angles

A right turn means moving 90° clockwise from the current direction, and a left turn means 90° anticlockwise. For compound movements like SE or NW, visualize them at 45° angles between two cardinal directions.

4. Use the Pythagoras Theorem for Shortest Distance

When a person moves in two different directions forming a right angle, the shortest distance (displacement) is the hypotenuse. Example: If a person moves 3m north and then 4m east, the shortest distance is √(3² + 4²) = √25 = 5m.
