Question 1: A can complete a work alone in 25 days while B can complete the same work alone in 10 days. A started doing the work but after 5 days he is replaced by B who completed the remaining work. In how many days the work got completed?

a. 13 days

b. 12 days

c. 15 days

d. 10 days

e. 18 days

Answer: a

Solution:

Let the total work = 50 units (L.C.M of 25 and 10)

Efficiency of A = 50/25 = 2 units/day

Efficiency of B = 50/10 = 5 units/day

Amount of work done by A in 5 days = 2 × 5 = 10 units

Remaining work = 50 – 10 = 40 units

Time taken by B to complete the remaining work = 40/5 = 8 days

Total number of days = 8 + 5 = 13 days

Hence, option a.

Question 2: The ratio of length of train A to train B is 5:4. Train A and B can cross a man in 30 seconds and 20 seconds respectively. Find the speed of the train B if the speed of train A is 72 km/h.

a. 82.4 km/h

b. 86.4 km/h

c. 80.4 km/h

d. 92.4 km/h

e. 75.4 km/h

Answer: b

Solution:

Length of train A = 72 × 5/18 × 30 = 600

Length of train A = 600 m

Length of train B = 4/5 × 600 = 480 m

Speed of train B = 480/20 × 18/5 = 86.4 km/h

Hence, option b.

Question 3: A boat takes twice as much time to row a certain distance upstream as to row the same distance downstream. If the speed of the stream is 6 km/h, then find the time taken by it to row 108 km downstream and 42 km upstream.

a. 6 hours

b. 8 hours

c. 7.5 hours

d. 5.5 hours

e. 10 hours

Answer: b

Solution:

Let the speed of the boats in still water = x km/h

According to question: Downstream speed of the boat = 2 × upstream speed of the boat

x + 6 = 2 × (x – 6)

x + 6 = 2x – 12

x = 18

Time taken by the boat to cover 108 km downstream and 42 km upstream = 108/(18 + 6) + 42/(18 – 6)

= 4.5 + 3.5 = 8 hours

Hence, option b.

Question 4: A shopkeeper sold an article at two successive discounts of 20% and 25% respectively. If the article is sold at 20% profit, then by how much percent the article was marked up above its cost price?

a. 80%

b. 100%

c. 120%

d. 50%

e. 200%

Answer: b

Solution:

Let the marked price of the article be Rs. x

Therefore, selling price of the article = 0.75 × 0.80x = Rs. 0.6x

Cost price of the article = (0.6x/1.2) = Rs. 0.5x

Required percentage = {(x – 0.5x)/0.5x} × 100 = 100%

Hence, option b.

Question 5: Find the sum of all the numbers between 128 and 624, which are divisible by ‘9’ as well as’8’.

a. 2380

b. 2240

c. 2520

d. 2680

e. 2420

Answer: c

Solution:

Numbers which are divisible by ‘9’ as well as ‘8’, must be divisible by 72.

So, numbers between 128 and 624 which are divisible by 72 are:

144, 216, ……….., 576

So, number of terms between 128 and 624 which are divisible by 72 = n = {576 – 144}/72 + 1 = 7

Desired sum = (7/2) × {144 + 576} = 7 × 360 = 2520

Hence, option c.

Question 6: What will come in the place of question mark (?) in the given expression?

? = (36 × 15) – 40% of 202

a. 320

b. 380

c. 420

d. 360

e. 300

Answer: b

Solution:

? = (36 × 15) – 40% of 202

? = 540 – 40% of 400

? = 540 – 160

? = 380

Hence, option b.

Question 7: What will come in place of the question mark (?) in the following series?

44, 45, 53, 62, ?, 151

a. 124

b. 126

c. 78

d. 102

e. 200

Answer: b

Solution:

44 + 12 = 45

45 + 23 = 53

53 + 32 = 62

62 + 43 = 126

126 + 52 = 151

Hence, option b.

Question 8: The income of A is Rs. 5000 more than that of B, while the expenditure of A is Rs. 5000 less than that of B. If the savings of A and B is Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 10,000 respectively, then find the income of A.

a. Rs. 35000

b. Rs. 38000

c. Rs. 45000

d. Rs. 50000

e. cannot be determined

Answer: e

Solution:

Let the income of A be Rs. x

Therefore, income of B = Rs. (x – 5000)

Let the expenditure of A be Rs. y

Therefore, expenditure of B = Rs. (y + 5000)

According to the question,

x – y = 20000……. (1)

And, x – 5000 – y – 5000 = 10000

Or, x – y = 20000…. (2)

Therefore, income of A cannot be determined.

Hence, option e.
