In this blog, we have provided a simple, step-by-step guide on how to master the Reasoning section for the SSC CHSL Tier 2 exam.

Get Familiar with the SSC CHSL Tier 2 Reasoning Section

The Reasoning section in Tier 2 tests your logical thinking, problem-solving ability, and analytical skills. Questions can be tricky, but with consistent practice, you can solve them accurately and quickly. Here, we have provided the detailed reasoning exam pattern and syllabus.

  • Number of Questions: 30
  • Marks per Question: 3 marks each (Total 90 Marks)
  • Negative Marking: 1 mark for each wrong answer

Topic-Wise Tips to Prepare Reasoning for SSC CHSL Tier 2 Exam

Here, we have mentioned those topics that are the most scoring and contain high weightage in the exam. Along with that, we have mentioned some tips that will help you prepare that topic easily.

Analogy & Classification

  • Focus: Quickly find the connection (ratio, square, type, function) between the given items.
  • Tip: Practice questions based on squares, cubes, prime numbers, and mathematical operations. Time yourself to improve speed.

Series (Number and Alphabet)

  • Focus: Identifying the hidden pattern. Patterns can be simple (adding 2, 4, 6…) or complex (alternate patterns, multiplying by 2, then subtracting 1).
  • Tip: Write down the alphabet positions (A=1, B=2, etc.) for alphabet series questions until you memorize them. This is a massive time saver.

Coding-Decoding

  • Focus: Understanding the rule behind the code. This might be letter shifting (+2, -3), swapping positions, or number substitution.
  • Tip: Look for the most common types of patterns first. The Tier 2 questions will often combine 2-3 basic patterns to make them tricky.

Blood Relations & Direction Sense

  • Focus: Accuracy is everything here.
  • Tip (Blood Relations): Always draw a simple family tree using symbols (e.g., a square for male, a circle for female, a double line for marriage). This stops you from getting confused.
  • Tip (Direction Sense): Make a quick, rough diagram showing North, South, East, and West before you start solving.

Syllogism & Puzzles

  • Focus: These are purely logic-based and need a clear, systematic approach.
  • Tip (Syllogism): Always use Venn Diagrams (circles) to represent the statements. For example, draw two circles that touch for “Some A are B” and two completely separate circles for “No A is B.”
  • Tip (Puzzles): For seating arrangements or floor puzzles, draw a table or structure and fill in the definite facts first. Do not make assumptions!

Strategy to Boost Your SSC CHSL Tier 2 Reasoning Score

You can read all the books in the world, but your score depends on practice.

1. Focus on Tier 2 PYQs (Previous Year Questions)

Once you get familiar with the syllabus and build your foundation, you are advised to solve previous year question papers so that you can types of questions asked in the exam, the difficulty level of the questions, and the pattern of the questions. You can solve them on PracticeMock’s website.

2. Practice with a Timer

Most candidates know the answer and they also know how to solve it, but still they failed because they don’t know how to solve the questions within the time limit. Always solve sets of 15-20 questions with a timer. For the Reasoning section, you should aim to solve 30 questions in around 20-25 minutes to save time for Maths and English.

3. Take Full Mock Tests Regularly

Mock tests act like a performance report; they show you exactly where you need improvement. Take one full-length Tier 2 mock test every week. Spend 1–2 hours analyzing it:

  • Which questions were wrong?
  • Which ones took too long?
  • Which topics slowed you down?

Then, for the next 2–3 days, work specifically on those weak areas. Start smart, stay consistent, and remember that every question you get right in Reasoning is a high-scoring step toward your final selection.
