SSC has successfully conducted the SSC CGL 2025 Tier 1 exam. Hope you have nailed it. If you have not started preparing for the Tier 2 exam and are waiting for the results, you might be mistaken. Look, the SSC CGL Tier 2 exam is the next level exam, so instead of waiting for the result, you should start your preparation right now. Let’s talk about how to start your preparation for SSC CGL 2025 Tier 2 exam. Most candidates get scared about how they will cover the syllabus, how they will practice it, and how to revise this vast syllabus, and so on. Don’t worry, we are here to help you out with these issues. Just read this blog carefully, and at the end, you will have an idea to start your preparation correctly.
1. First, Get Familiar with the New Pattern and Syllabus
Before starting your preparation for the SSC CGL Tier 2 exam, you should get familiar with the exam pattern and syllabus. Tier 2 sections are at most the same as the Tier 1 exam, except computer knowledge test and typing test. It’s a single, long exam with two sessions, both held on the same day. This is the main exam that decides your final merit (rank). It has three sections and a total duration of 2 hours and 15 minutes. Below, we have mentioned the detailed exam pattern for the Tier 2 exam.
| Session | Subject | Number of Questions | Maximum Marks | Time allowed |
| Session- I (2 hours and 15 minutes) | Section I: A: Mathematical Abilities (30 Questions) B: Reasoning and General Intelligence (30 Questions) | 60 | 60*3=180 | 1 hour (for each section) (1 hour and 20 minutes for the candidates eligible for scribe as per Para-7.1, 7.2, and 7.3) |
| Section II: A: English Language and Comprehension (45 Questions) B: General Awareness (25 Questions) | 70 | 70*3=210 | ||
| Section III: Computer Knowledge Test | 20 | 20*3=60 | 15 Minutes (For Section III & IV Each) | |
| Session- II (15 Minutes) | Section IV: Data Entry Speed Test | One Data Entry Task | – | (20 minutes for the candidates eligible for scribe as per Para-7.1, 7.2, and 7.3) |
- Final Rank is from 390 Marks: Your job and rank depend on the total marks from Maths (90) + Reasoning (90) + English (135) + General Awareness (75).
- English is the Game Changer: With 45 questions and 135 marks, this single section has the highest weightage.
- Computer and DEST are Mandatory to Pass: You must pass the Computer module and the Data Entry Skill Test (DEST). If you fail in these, you fail the whole exam, even with a great score in the main sections.
2. Create a Detailed and Realistic Study Plan
SSC has not released any exact dates for the Tier 2 exam, but you can expect the scheduling of this exam in December/ January 2025. You have limited time, so you cannot study randomly. A good plan means regular time for all subjects, especially your weak areas. We have created a detailed blog on SSC CGL Study Plan that you can follow, and below we have provided a daily study routine that will help you utilize your day effectively.
| Time | Study Focus | Key Activity |
| 7:00 AM – 9:00 AM | English (The Highest Scorer!) | Read one Newspaper Editorial + Work on Vocabulary (Synonyms/Antonyms/Idioms) |
| 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM | Maths (Concepts are King) | Pick 1-2 topics (e.g., Algebra/Geometry). Focus on advanced-level questions and formulas. |
| 2:30 PM – 4:00 PM | Reasoning/General Awareness | Alternate days. Practice long, tricky puzzles for Reasoning. Revise Static GK for GA. |
| 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM | Practice & Revision | Solve Previous Year Questions (PYQs). Work on weak topics found in your last mock. |
| 9:00 PM – 9:30 PM | Qualifying Tests | Practice Typing/DEST for 15 mins + Read Computer Basics (3 days a week). |
3. Focus on Building Your Foundation: Section-wise Tips
To score good marks in the exam, it’s important to focus on each section seriously. For that, you need to first build your foundation, but you have already built it during your Tier 1 preparation. Still, you are advised to do it again, but try to finish it in 5-7 days. Also, check for topics that you have not prepared during your Tier 1 exam preparation.
Mathematical Abilities (30 Questions, 90 Marks)
- Change in Focus: Tier 1 was about speed. Tier 2 is about deep concepts and solving tougher, sometimes lengthier, questions.
- New Topics: Make sure to cover topics like Statistics and Probability, which are new additions and very scoring if you get the basics right.
- Strategy: Don’t just rely on shortcut tricks. Master the fundamental method first. In Tier 2, SSC can ask questions in a twisted form.

Reasoning & General Intelligence (30 Questions, 90 Marks)
- Tougher Questions: The questions will be more time-consuming. Look for complex arrangements, series, and statement-based questions.
- Strategy: Practice at least 30-40 challenging reasoning questions daily. The key is to spot the pattern quickly under exam pressure.

English Language & Comprehension (45 Questions, 135 Marks)
- Highest Weightage: This section will make or break your rank. You need to score very high here.
- Must-Practice Areas: Spend major time on Reading Comprehension (Passages), Cloze Test, and Para Jumbles. These test your understanding, not just rote memory.
- Vocabulary/Grammar: Continue revising grammar rules and use tools like ‘Word Power Made Easy’ to strengthen your vocabulary. Daily newspaper reading is a must!

General Awareness (25 Questions, 75 Marks)
- Deeper Questions: Unlike Tier 1, questions here can be deeper. Don’t just read headlines. Try to understand the topic deeply.
- Strategy: Focus on Current Affairs from the last 6-8 months. For Static GK (History, Polity, etc.), use a standard GK book (like Lucent’s) and revise key facts regularly.

Computer Knowledge & DEST (Qualifying)
- Don’t ignore: This is a mandatory qualifying section. Study the basics of Computer Fundamentals, MS Office (Word, Excel), Internet, and Networking. A simple book on Computer Awareness is enough.
- Typing: Practice the Data Entry Speed Test (DEST) for 15-20 minutes daily right from the start. You must achieve the required speed and accuracy.

4. Choose Your Best Study Materials
You don’t need a hundred books. Pick the best few and solve them multiple times.
| Section | Recommended Book(s) | Focus Area |
| Maths | R.S. Aggarwal (for basics) OR Play with Advanced Maths by Abhinay Sharma + Tier 2 PYQ Book | Concept clarity and advanced-level practice. |
| Reasoning | A Modern Approach to Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning by R.S. Aggarwal OR any Tier 2 PYQ Book | Practice a lot of tricky, time-consuming questions. |
| English | From Plinth to Paramount by Neetu Singh (for Grammar) + Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis (for Vocabulary) | Grammar Rules, Vocabulary, and Daily Reading. |
| General Awareness | Lucent’s General Knowledge (for Static GK) + PracticeMock Current Affairs Quizzes | Key facts and recent events. |
| Computers | Any basic Computer Awareness Book (like Lucent’s Computer) | Basics of Hardware, Software, MS Office, and Internet. |
5. Attempt Mock Tests and Do Their Analysis
This is the most important step in your preparation.
- Start with a Mock Test: Take a full-length SSC CGL Tier 2 mock test. This will show you exactly where you stand and what your weak spots are.
- Take Weekly Mocks: Once you’ve covered 50-60% of your syllabus, take a full-length mock test at least once a week. This will help you manage your time during the real exam.
- Analyze! The real benefit of a mock test is the analysis. Spend at least 2 hours on it. Ask yourself:
- Where did I get stuck? (This means a concept is weak.)
- Where did I make a silly mistake? (This means you need to be more careful.)
- Where did I spend too much time? (This means you need a faster method.)
- Work on Your Weak Areas: For the next few days, only focus on the weak topics you found in your mock test and try to improve them.
Your success comes from this cycle: Learn -> Practice -> Mock Test -> Analyze -> Improve. Stick to it, and you’ll be ready to crack the SSC CGL Tier 2 exam.
