What is a floor-based puzzle?

Floor-based puzzles are a type of seating arrangement puzzle in which people live on different floors of a building, and you have to arrange them according to the clues given. The number of floors usually ranges from 5 to 10, and the clues can be direct or indirect.
In many puzzles, additional variables such as people’s hobbies, professions or favourite colours are added for complexity, especially in mains level puzzles.

1. Floor-Based Puzzle:
Floor-based puzzles mostly involve N number of people living on N different floors of a building (For example, 8 floors, numbered 1 to 8 from bottom to top or top to bottom depending upon the puzzle).
Key Tips:

  1. Understand the directions given:
    • Firstly, you should always check if floor numbering is from bottom to top (standard is 1 = bottom).
    • Secondly, you can check for constraints like: “A lives on a floor above B”, “X lives between Y and Z”, etc.
  2. Always create a vertical table:
    • You should always draw 8 boxes (for 8 floors) vertically and keep space for multiple attributes/variables (name, colour, profession, etc.).
  3. Start with definite clues:
    • Clues like “C lives on the bottom floor” or “Only one person lives between D and E” help anchor your structure.
  4. Handle comparative clues carefully:
    • “X lives three floors above Y” → If Y is on the third floor, X must be on the sixth floor.
    • Retain all possible combinations when unsure (use symbols or codes).
  5. Use the elimination method:
    • While placing one clue, if it contradicts another, then backtrack and try an alternative clue.

2. Flat-Floor Based Puzzle:
These are more complex: several people live on several floors, and there are two flats on each floor (Flat 1 and Flat 2). Commonly seen in puzzles like this: “An 8-floor building with two flats on each floor.”
Key Tips:

  1. Create a grid:
    • Create a matrix of 8 rows × 2 columns (for example, flat A and flat B or flat 1 and flat 2).
    • Each cell always represents one flat.
  2. Mark floors and flats separately:
    • E.g., Floor 8 – Flat 1: ____, Floor 8 – Flat 2: ____… and so on.
  3. Label properly:
    • While solving the puzzle do not confuse flat number with floor number.
    • Always keep the flat type consistent (e.g. always flat 1 = left, flat 2 = right).
  4. Use symbols for tentative entries:
    • Use “?” or pen markings to keep track of uncertain positions.
  5. Focus on uniqueness:
    • Each person should be placed only once. Keep track of already placed data.
Clue PhraseMeaning
“A lives immediately above B”A is on floor x, B is on floor x-1
“Only three people live above X”X is on 5th floor in 8-floor building
“Between A and B”Can be one, two, or more persons
“Lives on an even-numbered floor”Floor 2, 4, 6, 8 (if 8-floor building)
“No one lives above A”A lives on the top floor
