What is Time, Speed & Distance?

It is a mathematical relationship between the speed at which something travels, the distance it travels, and the time it takes to travel that distance. The basic formula is:

 Formula

  • Speed = Distance / Time
  • Time = Distance / Speed
  • Distance = Speed × Time

Units must be the same. Always convert km/hr to m/s using:
1 km/hr = (5/18) m/s
And vice versa: 1 m/s = (18/5) km/hr

Strategy to Solve Time, Speed, and Distance Questions

Solving Time, Speed, and Distance (TSD) questions becomes very easy if you follow the right approach. Below are the simplest and most effective strategies to score full marks in this topic in the RRB Clerk 2025 Prelims exam.

1. Learn and Apply Basic Formulas Perfectly

Most TSD questions are formula-based, so make sure you remember the three core formulas:

  • Speed = Distance ÷ Time
  • Distance = Speed × Time
  • Time = Distance ÷ Speed
Once you know these well, 50% of the questions become very easy.

2. Convert Units Quickly (km/hr ↔ m/s)

Train and running questions always require unit conversion.
Remember:

  • km/hr → m/s = × 5/18
  • m/s → km/hr = × 18/5
Practice these so you don’t waste time during the exam.

3. Use Relative Speed Smartly

Many questions involve two moving objects.

  • Opposite direction → Add speeds
  • Same direction → Subtract speeds
This helps in solving trains, circular track, and chasing questions in seconds.

4. For Train Questions, Focus on Distance Covered

Remember:

  • While crossing a pole, distance = train length
  • While crossing a platform, distance = train length + platform length
  • While crossing another train, the distance = the sum of both lengths
Once distance is known, apply Time = Distance ÷ Speed.

5. Apply Shortcuts for Average Speed

If the distance is the same:

Average Speed=2aba+b\text{Average Speed} = \frac{2ab}{a + b}Average Speed=a+b2ab

If distance is different, use:

Average Speed=Total DistanceTotal Time\text{Average Speed} = \frac{\text{Total Distance}}{\text{Total Time}}Average Speed=Total TimeTotal Distance

6. Draw Small Diagrams for Boat & Stream

A simple diagram showing upstream and downstream helps avoid confusion.

  • Downstream = Boat + Stream
  • Upstream = Boat – Stream
From this, you can easily find boat speed and stream speed.

7. Focus on Speed Tricks Instead of Calculations

Learn common speed values:

  • 36 km/hr = 10 m/s
  • 54 km/hr = 15 m/s
  • 72 km/hr = 20 m/s
These appear frequently in exam questions and save time.

8. Practice Previous Year Questions for Exam Patterns

RRB exams repeat question styles often.
Solving last 3–4 years of TSD questions will give you the exact idea of framing, speed tricks, and typical calculation patterns.

9. Maintain Accuracy Over Speed

TSD questions are easy but mistakes happen when you rush.
Use:

  • Clear writing
  • Unit check

Proper formula application
This ensures full marks.
