IBPS SO English Language Preparation 2025

The English language in the IBPS SO Prelims exam consists of 50 questions of 25 marks, where the time limit is 40 minutes. If you wisely answer all the questions, it is possible to crack this section in the exam. For this, you need a little bit of guidance, consistency, and discipline. There is a negative marking of 1/4th of the marks allotted to the question

Step 2: Build Strong Fundamentals

You need to get a strong hold on important grammatical rules in English. And make it your daily habit to read newspapers. You should also know what to read.   1. Subject Verb Agreement:
    • One of the most commonly used concepts, subject-verb agreement ensures that the subject and its verb agree in number.
    • A singular subject requires a third-person singular verb, while a plural subject requires a base form verb.
  2. Adverbs and Adjectives:
    • Many questions are frequently asked to test the candidate’s familiarity with the concepts of adjectives and adverbs.
    • Adjectives modify nouns and pronouns, and adverbs modify adjectives, verbs, and other adverbs.
  3. Tense:
    • Questions testing one’s understanding of the concepts of tense are also common in bank exams.
    • A sentence in the simple present tense has a third-person singular or base form verb, according to the number of the subject.
    • A sentence in the simple past tense has the second form of the verb. Perfect tenses have the third form of the verb, while continuous and perfect continuous tenses have verbs in their ing form.
  4. Articles:
    • Articles also form an important part of grammar-based questions in bank exams.
    • The article A is used with singular countable nouns with a consonant sound, and the article AN is used with singular countable nouns with a consonant sound.
    • The article THE is used with nouns that have been mentioned before.
  5. Nouns:
    • Grammar-based questions can also be framed around the concepts of nouns. Structures such as ONE OF THE and NONE OF THE are followed by plural nouns.
    • EACH and EVERY are followed by a singular noun.

Step 3: Break down the Syllabus

Now, break down the syllabus such that you can cover 4 to 5 important topics every week, along with the preparation of other subjects. The English language syllabus in the IBPS SO exam contains topics like Para Jumbles, Cloze Test, Reading Comprehension, etc. You can divide the syllabus into topics to be studied every week.
