What is a Floor-Based Puzzle?

A Floor-Based Puzzle is a type of logical reasoning question in which several people live on different floors of a building. Candidates are required to determine the correct arrangement of people according to the clues provided.

The building may have:

  • Simple floors (e.g., 5 floors or 7 floors)
  • Mixed variables such as different hobbies, cities, or professions.

Your task is to use logical deduction to find who lives on which floor, keeping in mind that the ground floor is the lowest and the top floor is the highest (unless stated otherwise).

Step-by-Step Process to Solve Floor Puzzle Questions in Just 3-4 Minutes

The Floor-Based Puzzle is one of the most common and high-scoring topics in the SEBI Grade A 2025 Reasoning section. While these questions can seem time-consuming, you can easily solve them within 3–4 minutes using a structured and logical approach.

Here’s a proven 6-step shortcut strategy to solve any Floor Puzzle quickly and accurately 👇

Step 1: Read the Question Carefully (30 seconds)

  • Before jumping into solving, read the entire question once to understand:
  • How many floors are there (5, 7, or 8)?
  • How many people/variables are given?
  • Whether there an additional variable (like colour, profession, or city)?
  • Whether the floors are numbered 1 (bottom) to N (top) or vice versa (sometimes the question reverses it).

Step 2: Create a Simple Table (30 seconds)

Quickly draw a neat framework with floors from top to bottom. Example:

FloorPersonVariable (if any)
7
6
5
4
3
2
1

This visual structure makes it easier to connect and cross-check clues without confusion.

Step 3: Pick and Place the Direct Clues (30–45 seconds)

Scan through all statements and identify definite information first.
Examples:

  • “A lives on the top floor.” → Place A on Floor 7.
  • “B lives on the 2nd floor.” → Place B on Floor 2.

These are fixed placements — mark them first to build a base.

Step 4: Decode the Relational Clues (60 seconds)

Now move to linked or comparative clues, like:

  • “C lives two floors above D.”
  • “E lives immediately below F.”

Represent these clues symbolically for faster linking:

  • C ↑2 D (means C is 2 floors above D)
  • E ↓1 F (E lives one floor below F)

Now try placing them using the fixed data you already have.

Step 5: Combine & Eliminate (60 seconds)

Now start merging all clues logically.

  • Try one possible arrangement.
  • If something contradicts another clue, discard it and try the alternate.

This is where most candidates waste time, but the trick is to test and eliminate quickly instead of re-reading every clue multiple times.

Step 6: Verify the Final Arrangement (30 seconds)

Once all clues fit logically, take 30 seconds to verify:

  • Does every statement match your arrangement?
  • Is there any missing or conflicting information?

If everything checks out — you’ve solved it correctly!
