Mensuration is one of the simplest and most scoring topics in the Quantitative Aptitude section of the RRB Clerk 2025 exam. If you are one of the students who likes formulas and direct application-based questions, this topic is for you. Usually, 1–2 questions are asked in the prelims, and sometimes even more in the mains. You can not skip this topic.

In this blog, we will go through what Mensuration is, basic formulas you need, question types, and tips to solve them quickly and accurately.

What is Mensuration?

Mensuration deals with measuring length, area, surface area, and volume of different 2D and 3D shapes like squares, rectangles, circles, cylinders, cubes, and cones.

 Important Formulas

Here are a few formulas you should remember:

  • Area of Rectangle = Length × Breadth
  • Area of Square = Side × Side
  • Area of Circle = π × r²
  • Circumference of Circle = 2πr
  • Curved Surface Area of Cylinder = 2πrh
  • Volume of Cylinder = πr²h
  • Surface Area of Cube = 6a²
  • Volume of Cube = a³

(Use π = 22/7 unless mentioned otherwise)

Importance & Weightage of Mensuration In IBPS Clerk

In RRB Clerk Prelims, Mensuration contributes 1–2 questions, often from 2D (like circles, squares) or 3D (like cubes, cylinders) topics. These are usually direct formula-based, which means if you know your formulas, you can solve them in less than a minute.

Tips to Solve Mensuration Questions Accurately

Mensuration questions are mostly formula-based, but small calculation errors or misreading of units can cut your marks. Follow these detailed tips to improve your accuracy and speed:

Learn All Basic Formulas Thoroughly

Mensuration is 90% about knowing and remembering the correct formulas. Make a list of all important formulas for 2D and 3D shapes. For example:

  • 2D Shapes: Area of square, rectangle, triangle, circle, trapezium, etc.
  • 3D Shapes: Surface area and volume of cube, cuboid, cylinder, cone, sphere, etc.

Draw Simple Diagrams When Solving

Even if the diagram isn’t given, sketch the figure based on the question. This helps in visualizing dimensions like radius, height, or side.

Convert Units Carefully

Many students lose marks because they forget to convert units. Always make sure all dimensions are in the same unit before applying the formula.

Practice Shortcuts and Quick Approximations

Mensuration questions can involve big numbers. Learn to use smart approximations for π (use 22/7 or 3.14 as per convenience), and do basic multiplication or squaring faster with tricks. Example: Instead of multiplying 22/7 × 14 × 14, just cancel 7 and 14 first.
