Key Concepts to Revise Before the RRB Clerk Exam

In this section, we are providing the key concepts to revise before the RRB Clerk Exam.

Understanding Basic Ratios

Ensure you are comfortable converting real values into ratios and simplifying them. Ratio simplification should be quick and accurate.

Proportion

Remember that a : b = c : d is the foundation for cross-multiplication. Most exam questions use this relationship for finding missing values.

Percentage–Ratio Conversions

Switching between percentages and ratios helps in profit–loss, DI sets, and mixture questions.

Compound Ratios

These are used when multiple ratios are given and need to be combined. Accuracy in multiplying corresponding terms is crucial.

Direct and Inverse Proportion

Direct proportion increases together, while inverse proportion moves in opposite directions. This is important in Time–Work and Speed–Time–Distance questions.

Types of Questions Asked in RRB Clerk Exam

After analysing the previous year’s question patterns, these are the most common Ratio & Proportion question types seen in the RRB Clerk exam. Understanding these with examples will help you revise faster and improve accuracy.

Basic Ratio Simplification

What this includes:

Questions that check if you can reduce ratios, convert values into ratios, or adjust ratios after adding/subtracting quantities.

Example:

The ratio of boys to girls in a class is 24 : 36. Simplify the ratio.

Solution:
Divide both by 12 → 24/12 : 36/12 = 2 : 3.

Distribution-Based Questions

What this includes:

Money or quantities divided in a given ratio.
Very common in DI and simple word problems.

Example:

₹900 is divided between A and B in the ratio 2 : 1.
How much does A receive?

Solution:
Total parts = 2 + 1 = 3
Value of 1 part = 900/3 = 300
Amount for A = 2 parts = ₹600

Mixture and Alligation

What this includes:

Questions where two substances are mixed in a ratio OR problems solved using the allegation rule.
These appear indirectly but regularly.

Example:

A mixture has milk and water in the ratio 3 : 2.
If the total quantity is 25 litres, find the quantity of milk.

Solution:
Total parts = 3 + 2 = 5
Milk = (3/5) × 25 = 15 litres

Time-Work Efficiency Ratio Questions

What this includes:

Questions where efficiency or time taken is indirectly connected to ratio concepts.

Example:

A and B can complete a work in the ratio of their efficiencies = 3 : 2.
If together they finish the work in 10 days, in how many days will A alone finish it?

Solution:
Efficiency ratio of A : B = 3 : 2
Work ratio (time taken) = 1/efficiency = 2 : 3

Total efficiency = 3 + 2 = 5 units/day
Total work = 10 days × 5 units/day = 50 units
A’s time = 50 / 3 = 16⅔ days

Ages and Partnership Questions

What this includes:

Ratios appear in age gaps, future–past ages, or investment–time relationships in partnership.

Example (Ages):

The present age ratio of A and B is 4 : 5.
If B is 25 years old, find A’s age.

Solution:
4x : 5x → 5x = 25 → x = 5
A’s age = 4x = 20 years

Example (Partnership):

A invests ₹6000 and B invests ₹4000.
If A invests for 12 months and B invests for 6 months, find the profit-sharing ratio.

Solution:
Effective capital ratios =
A → 6000 × 12 = 72,000
B → 4000 × 6 = 24,000

Ratio = 72,000 : 24,000 = 3 : 1

Common Mistakes to Avoid while solving the questions

In this section, we are talking about the common mistakes to avoid while solving the questions.

  • Over-Simplification – Many aspirants reduce ratios too aggressively under time pressure. Incorrect simplification can change the final answer, so always verify before reducing.
  • Incorrect Cross-Multiplication – In proportion questions, swapping terms or misreading values is a frequent error. Always multiply across carefully and double-check your steps to avoid mistakes.
  • Misinterpreting Word Problems – Rushing through statements often leads to wrong conclusions. Take time to read the problem, identify what the ratio represents, and then apply formulas.
  • Mixing Percentages and Ratios Incorrectly – Treating percentages as ratios without proper conversion leads to calculation errors, especially in mixture, profit-loss, and DI questions. Always convert percentages into fractions or ratios before performing calculations
