SBI PO Exam Pattern

The exam consists of three stages: Preliminary, Mains and Group Discussion and interview. The syllabus and exam pattern for each stage are given below:

SBI PO Preliminary Exam

This is an online objective test with 100 questions from three sections: Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning Ability and English Language. Each section has 20 minutes of time allotted and carries 35, 35 and 30 marks respectively. There is negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer. Candidates who qualify in the Preliminary exam are eligible for the Mains exam.

SBI PO Mains Exam

This is also an online objective test with 155 questions from four sections: Data Analysis & Interpretation, Reasoning and computer Aptitude, General/Economy/Banking Awareness and English Language. Each section has a specific time limit of 45, 60, 35 and 40 minutes respectively and carries 60, 60, 40 and 40 marks respectively. There is also a descriptive test of 30 minutes duration with two questions on English Letter Writing and Essay for 50 marks. The descriptive test is conducted on the same day as the objective test. There is a negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer in the objective test.

Candidates who qualify in the Mains exam are called for the Group Discussion and Interview round. The Group Discussion carries 20 marks and the Interview carries 30 marks. The final selection is based on the aggregate marks obtained in the Mains exam and the Group Discussion and interview round.

SBI PO 2023 Syllabus

Here is a detailed overview of the syllabus for each phase of the SBI PO exam.

Prelims Syllabus

This is the first phase of the exam and consists of 100 objective type questions to be answered in 60 minutes. The syllabus for this phase includes:

  • Reasoning Ability: This section tests the logical and analytical skills of the candidates. The topics covered are puzzles, seating arrangements, syllogism, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense, alphanumeric series, inequality, order and ranking, etc.
  • Quantitative Aptitude: This section tests the numerical and mathematical skills of the candidates. The topics covered are simplification, approximation, number series, quadratic equations, data interpretation, arithmetic problems, data sufficiency, etc.
  • English Language: This section tests the verbal and grammatical skills of the candidates. The topics covered are reading comprehension, cloze test, error spotting, sentence improvement, fill in the blanks, para jumbles, word association, etc.

Mains Syllabus

This is the second phase of the exam and consists of 155 objective type questions and a descriptive test. The objective test has to be completed in 180 minutes and the descriptive test in 30 minutes. The syllabus for this phase includes:

  • Reasoning and Computer Aptitude: This section tests the logical and analytical skills as well as the basic computer knowledge of the candidates. The topics covered are similar to the preliminary exam with some additional topics like machine input-output, critical reasoning, course of action, decision making, etc. The computer knowledge topics include computer fundamentals, operating systems, internet, MS Office, keyboard shortcuts, etc.
  • Data Analysis and Interpretation: This section tests the data handling and interpretation skills of the candidates. The topics covered are data sufficiency, data comparison, caselet, missing data interpretation, etc.
  • General/Economy/Banking Awareness: This section tests the general knowledge and current affairs of the candidates with special focus on banking and economy related topics. The topics covered are banking terms and concepts, banking history and structure, RBI functions and policies, monetary policy, financial markets and institutions, economic policies and schemes, current affairs related to national and international events, awards and honors, sports, books and authors, etc.
  • English Language: This section tests the verbal and grammatical skills of the candidates. The topics covered are similar to the preliminary exam with some additional topics like essay writing, letter writing, precis writing, etc.

Interview

This is the final phase of the exam and consists of a face-to-face interaction with a panel of experts. The candidates are assessed on their personality traits, communication skills, leadership qualities, problem-solving abilities, etc. The candidates are also expected to have a good knowledge of banking and economy related topics as well as current affairs.
