SSC CGL Exam Pattern: How Are You Tested?

The exam happens in two main stages: Tier 1 and Tier 2.

  • Tier 1 is a qualifying round. You need to pass it to be eligible for the next stage.

  • Number Systems & Arithmetic: Percentage, Decimals, Fractions, Relationships, Whole Numbers, Ratio & Proportion, Square Roots, Averages, Interest, Profit & Loss, Discount, Partnership, Mixture and Alligation, Time/Distance, Time/Work.
  • Algebra & Geometry: Basic Algebraic Identities, Surds, Graphs of Linear Equations, Triangles (Centers, Congruence, Similarity), Circles (Chords, Tangents, Angles), Quadrilaterals, Regular Polygons.

5. Computer Knowledge Syllabus (Tier 2)

This is a qualifying section, but if you fail this, you fail the whole exam! Do not ignore it.

  • Computer Basics: Keyboard shortcuts, CPU, Input/Output devices, computer memory, backup devices, PORTs, Windows Explorer.
  • Software: Windows Operating system, MS Office basics (MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Internet & E-mails: Web Browsing, searching, downloading/uploading, Managing E-mail Accounts, e-banking.
  • Networking & Cybersecurity: Networking devices and protocols, Information security threats (hacking, viruses, worms, Trojans), and preventive measures.

6. Statistics Syllabus (Paper II – Only for JSO Post)

If you are aiming for the Junior Statistical Officer post, this is your Paper II syllabus:

  • Collection, Classification, and Presentation of Statistical Data (Primary/Secondary data, tabulation, graphs)
  • Measures of Central Tendency & Dispersion
  • Moments, Skewness, and Kurtosis
  • Correlation and Regression

Minimum Qualifying Marks & Typing Test

Just giving the exam isn’t enough; you have to hit the bare minimum to even be considered.

  • UR / General: 30%
  • OBC / EWS: 25%
  • Others: 20%

The Typing Test (DEST):

For posts like Tax Assistant, you must pass the Data Entry Speed Test. You need to type an English passage of about 2000 key depressions in 15 minutes. This roughly equals a typing speed of 35 words per minute (WPM).

Subject-wise Strategy to Clear the Exam

  1. For Math: Memorize squares up to 30, cubes up to 20, and all basic fraction values. Solve 50 questions daily to increase your speed.
  2. For English: Read an English newspaper for 20 minutes every morning. This covers your reading speed, vocabulary, and grammar all at once.
  3. For Reasoning: Do not read books for this. Just solve previous year’s question papers. It is all about pattern recognition.
  4. For General Awareness: Do not try to memorize thick GK books. Watch daily current affairs videos and use short summary notes.
  5. Give Mock Tests: Reading the syllabus is only 50% of the work. You must give at least one mock test every week to find your mistakes.
