SSC CGL Cut Off
The SSC CGL Cut Off 2026 will be officially released along with the results after the Tier 1 exams conclude in August–September 2026. Staying updated with the official SSC CGL Exam Date milestones ensures you can align your mock test strategies and revision timelines effectively. For general category candidates, the expected SSC CGL Tier 1 cut off will likely hover between 145 and 155 marks out of 200, given the 12,256 vacancies announced this year.
The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) releases the cut off in three main stages: Tier 1, Tier 2, and the Final Allotment list. These cut offs are published as official PDF lists on the web portal (ssc.gov.in) and are divided by post groups and categories (UR, OBC, SC, ST, EWS) for applicants who successfully clear the primary SSC CGL Eligibility Criteria.
Understanding the SSC CGL cut off trend is one of the smartest things you can do before starting your preparation. It gives you a clear idea of the score you need to stay ahead of the competition. Along with studying from standard books and previous year papers, regularly attempting SSC CGL Mock Test series can help you analyze your preparation level and improve your accuracy under real exam conditions. In this guide, we break down the expected cut offs, safe score strategy, and year-wise trends from the past decade so you can plan your preparation with clarity.
As per the latest SSC CGL Notification, the official SSC CGL 2026 Tier-1 cut-off has not been released yet. However, based on previous year trends, current competition level, vacancy details, and expert analysis, we have provided the expected SSC CGL cut off for different categories to help aspirants understand the probable score range for qualification.
Based on the official notification of 12,256 vacancies and the recent competition trends, we have calculated the expected cut off marks.
For the general posts (List 4), the paper is typically moderate to difficult. Assuming a similar difficulty level this year, here are the expected ranges:
| Category | Expected Tier 1 Cut Off |
| General (UR) | 145 – 155 marks |
| OBC | 142 – 150 marks |
| EWS | 140 – 148 marks |
| SC | 120 – 130 marks |
| ST | 110 – 120 marks |
The Tier 2 exam comprises 390 marks in total. To secure a guaranteed job (even the lowest grade pay post), candidates need to hit a solid minimum score.
| Category | Expected Tier 2 Minimum Score |
| General (UR) | 305 – 315 marks |
| OBC | 295 – 305 marks |
| EWS | 290 – 300 marks |
| SC | 275 – 285 marks |
| ST | 260 – 270 marks |
There is a big difference between a “cut off” and a “safe score.” The cut off is the score of the last selected candidate. A safe score is the target you should aim for in your mock tests to guarantee selection without worrying about the final merit list.
Because Tier 1 now has strict sectional timing (15 minutes per section), time management will be tough. However, a safe score in SSC CGL Tier 1 for general category students is 160+ marks. Scoring this high ensures that even if you face a tough shift, normalization will keep you well above the danger zone.
For general posts evaluated out of 390 marks, target a minimum score of 320+ marks. If you are eyeing premium options like an Income Tax Inspector or an Assistant Section Officer (ASO) in the Ministry of External Affairs—positions widely recognized for providing an exceptional SSC CGL Salary matrix and high social prestige—your safe score benchmark must sit firmly above 345 marks.
Candidates aiming to score above the expected cut off should regularly attempt an SSC CGL sectional mock test to evaluate their performance in individual sections, identify weak areas, and improve accuracy before moving on to full-length mock tests.
The Staff Selection Commission does not pick a cut off number randomly. It is decided mathematically based on four major factors.
When vacancies go up, the cut off goes down. For 2026, SSC announced 12,256 vacancies. Because this is a decent number, the cut off will be competitive but not unnaturally high.
If a shift has very tough math and reasoning questions, the average score drops. SSC balances this out, but an overall difficult exam cycle always brings the final cut off marks down.
Over 25 lakh students usually fill out the form, and around 12 to 15 lakh actually take the exam. More test-takers mean more people fighting for the same seats, pushing the required marks higher.
Because the SSC CGL exam happens over multiple days and shifts, SSC uses a mathematical formula to make things fair. If your shift was harder than others, your marks will increase after normalization. This naturally shifts the final SSC CGL cut off numbers higher than raw scores.
Analyzing the previous year data is the best way to predict future trends. Below is the complete history of SSC CGL cut offs from 2025 all the way back to 2014.
