Concept of Syllogism

Concept: Syllogism is a topic that belongs to the Reasoning section, where a conclusion is drawn on the basis of two or more statements.

1. Major Statement: The first statement that provides a general fact or idea.
2. Minor Statement: The second statement provides a specific case or example.
3. Conclusion: The logical result is derived from combining the major and minor premises.

Key Terms in Syllogism

• Universal Affirmative (A): “All A are B” (e.g., All dogs are animals).
• Particular Affirmative (I): “Some A are B” (e.g., Some cats are black).
• Universal Negative (E): “No A are B” (e.g., No men are immortal).
• Particular Negative (O): “Some A are not B” (e.g., Some books are not interesting).

Question 1: In the question below some statements are given followed by four conclusions I, II, III and IV. You have to take the given statements to be true even if they seem to be at variance with commonly known facts.
