SBI PO Exam Stages: The Three-Phase Journey

As per the official notification, the selection for Probationary Officers will be done through a three-phase process:

Phase I: Preliminary Examination Pattern

The Preliminary Examination is an Objective Test conducted online for a total of 100 marks. It is divided into three sections, each with its own separate timing.

Selection for Main Examination: Candidates are shortlisted for the Main Examination based on their overall marks in the Preliminary Exam. There is no sectional cut-off; only the aggregate score is considered. Approximately 10 times the number of vacancies in each category are selected for the Mains. The Prelims score is used only for shortlisting and is not counted in the final merit list.

Phase II: Main Examination Pattern

The Main Examination is the stage that actually decides your final ranking. It is conducted online and consists of an Objective Test for 200 marks and a Descriptive Test for 30 marks. Selection Criteria for Phase-III

To qualify for Phase-III (Group Exercise & Interview), candidates must:

  • Secure the minimum qualifying marks in each section of the Main Examination, including the Descriptive Test.
  • Score the minimum aggregate marks decided by the Bank.

Based on the Main Exam aggregate scores, a category-wise merit list is prepared, and approximately 3 times the number of vacancies are shortlisted for Phase-III.

Penalty for Wrong Answers

There is a negative marking of 0.25 marks for every incorrect answer in both the Preliminary and Main Examinations. No marks are deducted for unanswered questions.

Phase III: Psychometric Test, Group Exercise & Interview

Phase III consists of three stages: Psychometric Test, Group Exercise, and Personal Interview.

Psychometric Test

Candidates shortlisted for Phase III are required to take a Psychometric Test. This test helps SBI assess the personality traits and behavioural profile of candidates. The results are shared with the Interview Panel to provide a better understanding of each candidate during the interview process.

The Psychometric Test may be conducted online under supervision or at designated exam centres. All questions are compulsory. However, the test does not carry any marks and is used only for candidate profiling.

Final Selection Process and Merit List

The final selection of candidates is based on their performance in Phase II (Main Examination) and Phase III (Group Exercise & Interview). Candidates must qualify in both phases separately to be considered for final selection.

The final merit list is prepared using:

  • Marks obtained in the Main Examination (Objective + Descriptive Tests)
  • Marks obtained in the Group Exercise and Interview

Note: Marks scored in the Preliminary Examination are not considered for the final merit list. The Prelims stage is only used for shortlisting candidates for the Main Examination.

In the SBI PO Selection Process, the final merit list is prepared by combining the scores of the Main Examination and Phase III (Group Exercise & Interview). To maintain a uniform evaluation, SBI converts both scores to a common scale of 100.

Important Points About the SBI PO Exam Pattern

Candidates should keep the following points in mind regarding the SBI PO Selection Process:

  • The selection process is conducted in three stages: Prelims, Mains, and Group Exercise & Interview. Candidates must qualify for each stage to proceed to the next.
  • There is no sectional cut-off in the Preliminary Exam. However, the Main Examination has both sectional and overall cut-offs.

Q1. How many phases are there in the SBI PO Selection Process 2026?

Q2. Are Preliminary Exam marks added to the final merit list?
