Home » SSC CGL » Input Output Questions for SSC CGL

The SSC CGL examination is one of the most competitive government exams in India. One of the trickier and time-consuming topics in the reasoning section is Input-Output. This is a new topic that can be asked in the SSC CGL 2025 Tier 1 exam. Questions have been seen in the SSC Stenographer and Selection Post exams. Competition is very high, so you can’t afford to take the risk of leaving such topics for your CGL preparation. That’s why we are providing the machine input output questions for SSC CGL in a PDF format that you can download for free. Along with that, we have also provided a free mock test based on the Eduquity exam pattern. This will help you to prepare a new topic and to get familiar with the new exam interface.

What Are Input-Output Questions with Examples?

Input-Output questions test your ability to observe patterns, apply logic, and follow a sequence of operations on a given input (usually words, numbers, or both). It is a process of rearrangement of data according to some rules.

They ask questions based on these major patterns:

  1. Word-based arrangements
  2. Number-based arrangements
  3. Alphanumeric mix (words + numbers)

NOTE: Solving input-output questions can help you to understand the concept more easily.

Input-Output Question Example:

The system rearranges words and numbers in a certain pattern in each step.
Input: 36 red 24 mango 85 apple 19 yellow

Solution: Step I: apple 36 red 24 mango 85 19 yellow
– The word “apple” (alphabetically first among the words) is moved to the front.

Step II: apple mango 36 red 24 85 19 yellow
– The next word in alphabetical order, “mango”, is moved next to “apple”.

Step III: apple mango red 36 24 85 19 yellow
– The next word, “red”, is moved to follow the pattern.

Step IV: apple mango red yellow 85 36 24 19
– The last word, “yellow”, is placed in position, and numbers are sorted in descending order afterward.

Final Output: apple mango red yellow 85 36 24 19

Summary of Logic:

  1. First: All words are arranged alphabetically from left to right in the first few steps.
  2. Then: All numbers are arranged in descending order after the words are placed.

Machine Input Output Questions for SSC CGL: Download Free PDF

Here, we have provided the input-output questions for SSC CGL. Along with that, we have also provided a PDF in which you will get a detailed solution for the questions that we have provided here. You are advised to first solve the questions from here and then download the PDF for free. While solving the questions, make sure to analyze the level of questions carefully and try to solve more questions based on that pattern.

Directions (1-3): Read the given information carefully and answer the questions.

A number and word arrangement machine when given an input line of words and numbers rearranges them following a particular rule in each step. The following is an illustration of input and rearrangement.

Input: and 36 74 flight 21 cricket words together 49 33

Step I: 21 together and 36 74 flight cricket words 49 33

Step II: 21 together 33 cricket and 36 74 flight words 49

Step III: 21 together 33 cricket 36 flight and 74 words 49

Step IV: 21 together 33 cricket 36 flight 74 words and 49

Step V: 21 together 33 cricket 36 flight 74 words 49 and

Step VI: 3 8 6 7 9 6 11 5 13 3

Step VI is the last step of the above input. As per rules followed in the above steps, find out in each of the given questions the appropriate steps for the given input.

Input:

“16 31 large simple 46 develop not 18 93 many”

Common solution:

The rearrangement takes place in such a way that the number with the lowest sum of the digits and the word with the maximum number of letters is written from the left side respectively. Similarly, in further steps, the number with the next lowest sum of the digits and the word with the next largest number of letters is written to the right of the previous step. In the final step, the sum of the digits of the numbers is written with the number of letters in the words corresponding to them.

Input: 16  31  large  simple  46  develop  not  18  93  many

Step I: 31  develop  16  large  simple 46  not  18  93  many

Step II: 31  develop  16  simple  large  46  not  18  93  many

Step III: 31  develop  16  simple  18  large  46  not  93  many

Step IV: 31  develop  16  simple  18  large  46  many  not  93

Step V: 31  develop  16  simple  18  large  46  many  93  not

Step VI: 4  7  7  6  9  5  10  4  12  3

Question 1: Which element occurs third to the left of the element “93” in step IV?

A) 46

B) large

C) 18

D) many

Question 2: What is the position of the word “large” in step V in rearrangement of the given input?

A) Fourth from the right end

B) Fifth from the right end

C) Second from the right end

D) Fifth from the left end

Question 3: How many elements are there between the elements “46” and “develop” in Step III?

A) One

B) Two

C) Three

D) Four

Directions (4-6): Answer the questions based on the information given below.

Input: thin loan cart star high blue

Step I: star thin loan cart high blue

Step II: star loan thin cart high blue

Step III: star loan blue thin cart high

Step IV: star loan blue high thin cart

And, step IV is the last step of the above input. As per the rules followed in the above steps, answer the following questions for the given input.

Input: there layer spike truth meant hours

Common solution:

By observing the output, we get

The words are arranged in reverse English Alphabetical order from left to right considering the second alphabet of the word.

Given input: there layer spike truth meant hours

Step I: truth there layer spike meant hours

Step II: truth spike there layer meant hours

Step III: truth spike hours there layer meant

Step IV: truth spike hours there meant layer

Question 4: What is the second word from the right end in step III?

A) there

B) hours

C) layer

D) spike

Question 5: What would be the last step of the given input?

A) truth there layer spike meant hours

B) truth spike hours there meant layer

C) spike truth hours there layer meant

D) truth spike there hours meant layer

Question 6: What is the position of ‘spike’ with respect to the last word according to English Alphabetical order in step II?

A) Second to the right

B) Immediate right

C) Second to the left

D) None of the above

How to Solve Input Output Questions Easily?

Here, we have provided a strategy that will help you solve input-output questions easily in the SSC CGL exam. Follow these steps and practice them while you solve the questions.

  1. Understand the input format carefully, whether the series is of only numbers, words, or a combination of both.
  2. Focus on comparison in a way that first compares step 1 to the given series, step 2 to step 1, and so on, and check what changes you made (position, value, word arrangement).
  3. Now identify the pattern:
    • Numerical sorting: Ascending or descending
    • Alphabetical sorting: Based on first letter, word length, or reverse alphabetical order
    • Conditional shifting: Move odd numbers first, then even, or move vowels first
    • Mathematical operations: Addition, subtraction on numbers
    • Multiple operations: Sorting words and converting numbers simultaneously
  4. Once you spot the pattern, predict the next step if needed.
  5. Once you know the steps, check how many elements are processed per step, you can predict the total number of steps.

TIP: Just reading the above tips will not be enough until you do not implement while solving questions.
