The group stage is the first round of the tournament. Since there are 48 teams, FIFA will divide them into 12 groups. Each group will have 4 teams. Every team will play exactly three matches in this stage.
The top two teams from every group will automatically move to the next round. Also, the 8 best third-placed teams will move forward.
After the group stage ends, the knockout stage begins. This is a “do or die” round. If a team loses here, they go home. In 2026, the knockout stage will be longer because of the new “Round of 32”.
