Q1. Rice costing ₹40 per kg is mixed with rice costing ₹60 per kg to obtain a mixture worth ₹48 per kg. Find the ratio of cheaper rice to dearer rice.

Solution:
By the rule of alligation:

Cheaper : Dearer
= (Dearer price − Mean price) : (Mean price − Cheaper price)

= (₹60 − ₹48) : (₹48 − ₹40)
= 12 : 8
= 3 : 2

Answer: 3:2

Q2. In what ratio should 20% and 50% solutions be mixed to obtain a 30% solution?

Solution:
Ratio of 20% solution to 50% solution:

= (50 − 30) : (30 − 20)
= 20 : 10
= 2 : 1

Answer: 2:1

Q3. A vessel contains 40 litres of milk. Eight litres are removed and replaced with water. Find the quantity of milk remaining.

Solution:
Initially, the vessel contains 40 litres of pure milk.

Milk removed = 8 litres

Milk remaining = 40 − 8
= 32 litres

Alternatively:
Milk remaining = 40 × (1 − 8/40)
= 40 × 32/40
= 32 litres

Answer: 32 litres

Q4. A 60-litre mixture contains milk and water in the ratio 4:1. Find the quantity of water.

Solution:
Ratio of milk to water = 4:1

Total parts = 4 + 1
= 5 parts

Water = 60 × 1/5
= 12 litres

Answer: 12 litres

Q5. Tea worth ₹300 per kg is mixed with tea worth ₹450 per kg in the ratio 2:3. Find the average price of the mixture.

Solution:
Average price = Total cost ÷ Total quantity

Average price = [(₹300 × 2) + (₹450 × 3)] ÷ (2 + 3)

= (₹600 + ₹1,350) ÷ 5
= ₹1,950 ÷ 5
= ₹390 per kg

Answer: ₹390 per kg
