Every aspirant who wants to sit on the post of Grade B officer in the RBI knows how much competition is involved in this. On one hand, this post offers respect and other benefits, on the other hand, every year we have seen that vacancies are going down. Fewer vacancies and cut-throat competition can dampen your spirits. In the year 2023, when there were 300 posts, we saw that in 2024 this number fell to 94. That is, a 66% decline occurred. Let’s dig into old data and try to understand whether this time the numbers will fall even further. And if they do fall, then by how much? Or is it possible that they may even increase?
Notably, 2023 had nearly 300 posts, the highest in the last 6 years. In 2024, the total number of vacancies dropped drastically to just 94, which was a 66% decline. Let’s look at how the vacancies have changed in recent years and what the numbers reveal:
| RBI Grade B Vacancies Trends: Past 12 Years | |
| Year | Number of Vacancies |
| 2013 | 98 |
| 2014 | 117 |
| 2015 | 134 |
| 2016 | 163 |
| 2017 | 145 |
| 2018 | 166 |
| 2019 | 127 |
| 2020 | COVID-19 (No vacancy) |
| 2021 | 322 (General: 270, Highest in the last 6 Years) |
| 2022 | 238 |
| 2023 | 222 |
| 2024 | 94 (Lowest in the last 12 years) |
NOTE: As you can see from the table above, RBI Grade B vacancies have sharply declined since 2021. The posts dropped from 270 to just 94 in 2024. Thus, 2024 saw the lowest number of vacancies in the past decade.
In 2024, there was a sharp fall. It surprised many. Candidates raised concerns on forums. They were worried that the posts dropped from 200 to 60. Earlier, people having sources in the RBI claimed that there will be only 60 to 70 vacancies (total generalist) that year and the same number of vacancies next 4 to 5 years. Also, rumors suggested the RBI might stick to lower numbers for a few years. Or, they will shift towards lateral recruitments or experienced hires. And this would lessen the traditional Grade B intake.
Experts’ estimates say there will be around 80 to 110 total vacancies in 2025. Although the official notices haven’t been released yet, the RBI typically issues its notification between June and July. So far, expectations for 2025 hover around 80 to 110 posts, lower than earlier years. Hopefully, there will be a slight uptick in the total number of posts this year.
The RBI Grade B exam is very competitive. In 2024, the number of seats dropped a lot. To answer this question, we’ll have to keep in mind the data that says:
Several factors may explain the reduction:
Here’s what the aspirants can do:
From what we’ve gone through, we can say;
Yes, RBI Grade B vacancies in 2025 will likely stay low. They may not reach the 200+ level seen in 2021–2023. But a major drop is not expected either. Most signs point to around 80 to 110 seats. If you’re preparing, start now, assuming fewer seats. Sharpen Phase 1 & 2 strategy, especially GA, English and quantitative aptitude. Also, keep a backup plan ready. Stay updated. Wait for the official notification, which is expected to be out in June–July 2025. In the end, a limited number of vacancies means competition is tougher. Start today to beat the competition.
