The Staff Selection Commission has released the complete SSC CGL Selection Process 2026 details in its latest SSC CGL notification. Every year, lakhs of students apply for this exam to get high-paying Group B and Group C government jobs. But before starting your daily studies, you must clearly understand how the board selects the final winners.
To keep things simple, the SSC conducts the exam in two main stages: Tier 1 and Tier 2. After passing these written tests, you must clear the Document Verification round. In this post, we will explain all these stages in very simple language so you know exactly what to expect.
The SSC CGL Selection Process is created to check the basic knowledge and speed of the candidates. The board has removed the interview round completely. Now, your selection depends fully on the marks you score in the computer-based written exams. Let us look at a quick overview of the whole process.

The Tier 1 exam is the very first step. It is an online multiple-choice test. There will be 100 questions, and the total marks will be 200. You will get 2 marks for every right answer. But be careful, if you select a wrong answer, the board will deduct 0.50 marks.
The exam asks questions from four easy subjects: English, General Awareness, Reasoning, and Maths. You must pass this test to go to Tier 2. However, the marks you score here will not be added to your final job merit list.

If you pass Tier 1, you will get the admit card for the Tier 2 exam. This is the main exam of the SSC CGL selection process 2026 because your final job fully depends on the marks you score here. Tier 2 is also conducted online. It has two different papers: Paper I and Paper II.
Paper I is compulsory for every single candidate. Paper II is only for those who applied for the Junior Statistical Officer (JSO) post. Check the table below to understand the Tier 2 pattern clearly.

Candidates who successfully clear the Tier 1 and Tier 2 exams are called for Document Verification. Candidates must produce both original and photocopies of essential educational certificates, category/reservation proofs, and a valid photo-bearing ID proof matching the date of birth listed on their admit card.

Sometimes, two or more students get the exact same marks in the Tier 2 exam. In such cases, the SSC uses special tie-breaking rules to decide who gets the higher rank. They check these things step-by-step:
To stay in the competition, you must score basic passing marks in all exams. If you score less than these percentages, you will fail directly, even if the cut-off is low.

SSC CGL Physical tests are not required for normal desk jobs. But, if you apply for uniform-based posts like Inspector (Central Excise, Preventive Officer) or Sub-Inspector in CBI or NIA, you must pass a small physical test. The officers will check your height and chest. They will also ask you to do a simple walking and cycling test.
The SSC CGL Medical Test is conducted only for certain posts. It checks a candidate’s physical fitness, eyesight standards, and overall medical condition. Candidates must fulfill the prescribed medical requirements to be considered eligible for final appointment.
