The RRB NTPC General Awareness section is an important part of both stages of the Computer-Based Test. The number of questions differs between CBT 1 and CBT 2, so practise according to the stage for which you are preparing.
| Particulars | CBT 1 | CBT 2 |
| General Awareness questions | 40 | 50 |
| General Awareness marks | 40 | 50 |
| Total questions in the examination | 100 | 120 |
| Total examination marks | 100 | 120 |
| Duration of the complete examination | 90 minutes | 90 minutes |
| Marks for each correct answer | +1 | +1 |
| Negative marking for each incorrect answer | −1/3 mark | −1/3 mark |
The RRB NTPC section-wise distribution is indicative under the relevant recruitment notifications, and the actual question distribution may vary. The 90-minute duration applies to the complete CBT, not just the General Awareness section.
There is no separate official sectional timer for General Awareness in this pattern. During practice, you can aim to complete this section in approximately 22–25 minutes and adjust your target according to your accuracy and the difficulty of the questions. Treat this as a personal time-management target, not an official RRB NTPC examination rule.
The official RRB NTPC syllabus covers a broad range of static General Knowledge, current affairs, science, history, geography, polity and other topics. Preparing these areas systematically helps you build the knowledge required for both CBT 1 and CBT 2.
| Topic | Important areas to prepare |
| Current Affairs | National and international events, important appointments, awards, government initiatives, sports events and major developments |
| History of India | Ancient, medieval and modern Indian history, the freedom struggle and important historical personalities |
| Geography | Physical, social and economic geography of India and the world, rivers, mountains, climate and important places |
| Indian Polity and Constitution | Constitutional provisions, governance, political institutions, Fundamental Rights and important constitutional developments |
| General Science | Physics, Chemistry and Life Science concepts, generally up to the Class 10 CBSE level |
| Economy | Indian economy, basic economic concepts, important institutions and major economic developments |
| Art and Culture | Indian art, cultural traditions, literature, monuments and heritage sites |
| Sports | Major tournaments, sports personalities, championships, awards and important sporting achievements |
| Science and Technology | Scientific developments, space programmes, nuclear programmes and technological advancements |
| Environment and Ecology | Environmental issues, biodiversity, flora, fauna and conservation |
| Computer Awareness | Computer fundamentals, common computer applications and basic terminology |
| Important Organisations | The United Nations, other international organisations and significant Indian government and public-sector organisations |
| Transport and Railways | Transport systems in India and relevant railway-related general knowledge |
| Miscellaneous General Knowledge | Common abbreviations, famous personalities, important government schemes and other facts covered by the official syllabus |
These topics are based on the broad General Awareness syllabus in the RRB NTPC recruitment notifications. The list is intended to help organise revision; it does not indicate a guaranteed number of questions from any individual topic.
A balanced RRB NTPC preparation strategy should include both static General Knowledge and current affairs. Spending all your time on one area can leave gaps elsewhere in the syllabus.
Current affairs covers important national and international developments. Prepare major appointments, awards, government schemes, sports achievements, economic developments, scientific milestones and significant events.
Read current affairs regularly rather than trying to memorise everything in a single revision session. Make brief notes of important names, dates, organisations and facts, then revise them at regular intervals.
Focus on important historical events, rulers, movements, personalities and developments associated with India’s freedom struggle. Create a timeline for major events and revise the causes and outcomes of important movements.
Practise direct factual questions as well as questions that connect a historical event with the person, place or year associated with it.
Prepare important constitutional provisions, Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties, the Directive Principles of State Policy, Parliament, the President, constitutional bodies and key features of Indian governance.
Revision tables can help you distinguish between similar concepts, constitutional bodies and institutional responsibilities.
Cover physical geography, Indian states and capitals, rivers, mountain ranges, climate, natural resources, important locations and basic world geography. Maps can help you remember the positions of states, rivers, mountain ranges and neighbouring countries.
Revise basic Physics, Chemistry and Biology concepts from the prescribed school-level syllabus. Focus on scientific principles, everyday applications, human physiology, common chemical substances, units and measurements, and fundamental biological concepts.
Understanding the basic concept behind a fact can make it easier to solve questions presented in an unfamiliar way.
Prepare basic economic terminology, banking and financial concepts, major economic institutions and important government programmes. For schemes, learn their objectives, target beneficiaries and the ministries or organisations associated with them where relevant.
Revise Indian literature, cultural traditions, monuments, awards, important personalities, sports tournaments, international organisations, environmental topics, computer basics and transport systems.
Maintain concise notes for fact-based topics and revisit them frequently. These areas are easier to revise when information is organised into categories instead of scattered across long notes.
Attempting an RRB NTPC General Awareness Mock Test is only the first step. The real benefit comes from analysing your answers and using your results to improve preparation.
Step 1 – Attempt the test independently: Answer questions without checking notes or solutions. This gives you a more realistic idea of your current preparation level.
Step 2 – Check your answers: After completing the quiz or practice set, compare your responses with the available answer key.
Step 3 – Calculate your score: Apply the examination’s marking scheme to understand the effect of correct and incorrect answers.
Step 4 – Identify knowledge gaps: Separate questions you answered incorrectly because you did not know the fact from those you got wrong because you misread the question or confused similar information.
Step 5 – Revise the relevant topic: Return to your notes or study material and revise the concepts behind each mistake.
Step 6 – Practise similar questions: Once you have revised a weak area, solve additional questions from that topic to check whether you have understood it.
Step 7 – Reassess your performance: Attempt another RRB NTPC mock test and compare your score, accuracy and recurring mistakes with your previous attempts.
This process helps you identify whether your preparation is improving and which subjects need more attention.
The standard RRB NTPC CBT marking scheme awards one mark for each correct answer and deducts one-third of a mark for each incorrect answer. Unattempted questions do not attract a penalty.
Use the following formula to calculate your practice score:
Score = Correct answers − (Incorrect answers ÷ 3)
For example, suppose you answer 32 questions correctly, answer 5 incorrectly and leave 3 questions unattempted in a 40-question General Awareness practice set.
Use the same marking scheme while analysing your RRB NTPC General Awareness Mock Test so that you can compare your practice scores consistently. This calculation is for practice and does not represent a recruitment cutoff or guarantee of selection.
Improving your RRB NTPC General Awareness score requires consistent revision, focused practice and a clear method for correcting mistakes.

Refer to the applicable official RRB NTPC notification for the complete syllabus.

Revise current affairs regularly, prepare static GK topic by topic, practise RRB NTPC mock tests and analyse incorrect answers after each attempt. Keep notes of facts you repeatedly forget and test yourself again after revision.
Yes. A downloadable RRB NTPC GK Questions PDF can be used for offline practice and revision. Attempt the questions independently first and check the answers using the answer key or solutions provided with the file, if available.
