1.  Ratio: The ratio of two quantities ‘a’ and ‘b’, in the same units, is the fraction (a/b) and we write it as a:b.

2. Proportion: The equality of two ratios is called proportion.

If a:b = c:d, we write, a:b::c:d and we say that ‘a’, ‘b’, ‘c’, ‘d’ are in proportion. Here ‘a’ and ‘d’ are called extremes, while ‘b’ and ‘c’ are called mean terms. Also, the Product of means = Product of extremes.

Question 1: After 15 years, ratio of age of Swati and Smriti will be 5:6 respectively. Age of Swati 12 years ago was 42.5% less than age of Smriti, 5 years ago. If present average age of Swati, Smriti and Kajal is 40 years and 8 months, then find the present age of Kajal

Question 2: The ratio of number of guavas to number of apples sold by a shopkeeper is 16:21, and the ratio of number of pomegranate to number of guava sold by the same shopkeeper is 5:8. If the price of each pomegranate and each apple are Rs. 16 and Rs. 9, respectively and total revenue earned by selling all pomegranates is Rs. 145 less than total revenue earned by selling all apples, then find the number of guavas sold by shopkeeper.

Question 3: Present ages of Ram and Laxman are in the ratio 3:4, respectively and the present ages of Bharat and Satrughan are in the ratio 10:9, respectively. The present average age of Ram, Laxman, Bharat and Satrughan is 49 years and 6 months. Find the present age of Ram, if the present age of Bharat is 25% more than the present age of Laxman.

Question 4: A farmer mixes two varieties of rice of price Rs. 60 per kg and Rs. 48 per kg in the ratio of 1:2, respectively. If he sold the mixture for Rs. 1872, then find the quantity of rice of cost Rs. 60 per kg sold by him.

C) 12 kg

D) 18 kg

Question 5: Company B has 25% more employees than Company A. The respective ratio of males to females in Company A is 4:3. The ratio of males to females in Company B is 7:5. If number of males in Company A is 1920, then find the difference between number of females in Company A and that in Company B.
