NABARD Grade A Phase 1 Exam has an ESI section on rural India with 40 questions carrying 40 marks (40 questions). It is also a full paper of 100 marks (objective and descriptive) in the Phase 2 or Mains exam, and so it directly impacts your ranking in the final merit. It clearly is a vital subject that can decide your success, as ESI is 40 marks in Prelims and 100 marks in Mains. The ESI syllabus may look vast, but it’s actually easy to face for those who know the types of questions asked in it and the important topics that attract such questions. And once you are aware of the topics that matter most, your chances of fetching maximum marks skyrocket. In this blog, we’ll point out all those prime ESI areas that can help you increase your overall NABARD Grade A Phase 2 score.

10 Most Important Topics in ESI (Economic and Social Issues)

ESI plays two roles in NABARD Grade A. It’s part of both Phase 1 and Phase 2 and carries significant weightage in your final selection. And they are the Cut‑off marks that decide if you move ahead.

In Phase 1, it’s one of the three merit sections along with General Awareness and Agriculture & Rural Development. In Phase 2, it becomes a full-fledged paper with both objective and descriptive questions. That’s why you can’t afford to treat it casually. If you prepare ESI the right way, half your journey is already done.

Here are the 10 topics that you must master for to ESI for Phase 2 exam:

1. Indian Economy and Its Structure

You need to start with understanding how the Indian economy works. Know what GDP, GNP, inflation, fiscal deficit, and balance of payments mean. These are basic but crucial concepts. Questions on inflation trends, economic growth, and budget allocations often appear in both objective and descriptive sections.

Don’t just mug up numbers, but understand the logic behind them.

For example, here are the questions you should ponder over and find answers for:

  • What is the cause behind the rise of inflation?
  • What causes a fiscal deficit?
  • How does the government tackle unemployment? Etc.

The more you understand the link between economic problems and government actions, the better your descriptive answers will be.

2. Poverty, Employment, and Rural Development

These three are the heart of NABARD’s work, and that’s why they dominate the ESI paper. You should know all major poverty alleviation and employment generation schemes like MGNREGA, PMAY, PMEGP, and NRLM. Study their objectives, ministry names, and recent updates.

Rural development topics include infrastructure, skill development, and sustainable livelihood programs. Focus on how these schemes improve the rural economy. NABARD expects you to think from a rural development perspective. So, link your knowledge with real-life examples.

3. Agriculture and Food Security

Though agriculture overlaps with the ARD section, ESI still includes it in an economic context. Learn about agricultural subsidies, crop insurance, MSP, and food security programs like the National Food Security Act. Questions often come from recent government initiatives related to farmers’ welfare or agri-finance.

Also, stay updated on new technologies like precision farming, organic farming, and climate-resilient agriculture. These topics are increasingly being asked in descriptive papers because they connect economic growth with sustainability.

4. Financial Inclusion and Social Security

This is one of the most scoring parts of ESI. Financial inclusion means bringing every citizen under the formal banking system. Study schemes like PM Jan Dhan Yojana, PM Mudra Yojana, Stand-Up India, and PM Suraksha Bima Yojana.

Social security topics include pension, health, and insurance programs like Ayushman Bharat and PM Kisan Samman Nidhi. Questions usually test your understanding of how these schemes reduce inequality and promote inclusive growth.

To make your preparation strong, note down all schemes launched in the past year and revise them repeatedly. Most students lose marks because they forget small details like the launch year or the implementing ministry.

5. Education, Health, and Human Development

Human development is another recurring theme in NABARD papers. It includes education, health, and gender equality. Read about the National Education Policy, digital education initiatives, and government health programs. Schemes like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Poshan Abhiyaan, and PM POSHAN are frequently asked.

For descriptive writing, learn how to connect these topics with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For instance, how improving education contributes to economic growth, or how healthcare affects productivity. Writing these linkages shows depth and understanding.

6. Environment and Sustainable Development

This is one area that’s gaining importance every year. With growing awareness of climate change, NABARD now asks more questions related to the environment, biodiversity, and sustainability. Topics like renewable energy, water conservation, waste management, and carbon neutrality are essential.

Schemes like the National Mission for Green India, Jal Jeevan Mission, and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan must be on your fingertips. Also, revise India’s commitments under international agreements like the Paris Climate Accord. In descriptive papers, try to use simple examples showing India’s efforts in sustainable growth.

7. Industry, MSME, and Infrastructure

The rise of MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) has become a major theme in recent exams. You should know schemes like PMEGP, Startup India, and Stand-Up India. Understand how these industries help in employment generation and economic recovery.

Questions may also come from industrial policies, the Make in India initiative, and infrastructure programs like PM Gati Shakti and Bharatmala. The focus is not only on policies but also on their real-world impact on rural and semi-urban areas.

8. Globalization and International Cooperation

NABARD expects you to understand India’s position in the global economy. So, study how international organizations like IMF, World Bank, WTO, and UNDP influence our development. Keep an eye on India’s recent collaborations with global institutions in areas like climate finance or rural development.

Topics like globalization, trade reforms, and FDI trends are also important. Try to relate them to India’s inclusive growth goals. For descriptive answers, it helps to give short, factual examples instead of long explanations.

9. Current Affairs and Reports

As mentioned earlier, around 90% of ESI questions are based on current affairs. Read PIB releases, government press notes, and economic reports regularly. The most useful sources are NABARD Annual Report, Economic Survey, and Union Budget. Focus on key statistics, new programs, and rankings from reports like the Human Development Index or Global Hunger Index.

To manage time, read current affairs from the last six months thoroughly. You don’t need to remember everything, just what’s relevant to NABARD’s rural development mandate.

10. Descriptive Answer Preparation

In Phase 2, your descriptive paper decides your rank. Practice writing answers on ESI topics like rural poverty, inflation control, and financial inclusion. Keep your structure simple — introduction, analysis, and conclusion. Avoid copying data blindly. Instead, write logically and use examples.

Typing practice is also essential because the paper is online. Write one essay or answer every week. With regular writing, your speed, clarity, and confidence will improve naturally.

And, if you’re studying all by yourself and looking for the best self-study methods and practical daily routines, you should know how to prepare for NABARD Grade A Without Coaching.

In addition, why not ensure your mastery of all the topics discussed above via mock test practice?

Final Thoughts

ESI is not a section you can master in just a day. It needs steady effort and daily reading. But if you’ll pay attention to these ten areas: economy, poverty, employment, agriculture, finance, human development, environment, MSME, globalization, and current affairs, you’ll make sure you score maximum marks in it.

But you should not study with purpose and not cover all these topics in the name of just covering the syllabus.

Every scheme, every report, and every reform you read adds one more mark to your merit. Be consistent in your preparation and revision, and relate every topic to rural India, because that’s where the heart of NABARD truly lies.
