In seating arrangement puzzles, you have to arrange people according to the given data. They may be sitting in a straight line (linear), facing the same or opposite directions, or sitting around a round table (circular). Sometimes, they may be seated around square, rectangular, or other-shaped tables. The key is to carefully note positions, directions, and relationships between people. These puzzles require strong visualization skills and attention to detail.
In floor-based puzzles, people are placed on different floors of a building, and you need to figure out their exact arrangement using the clues. For example, the puzzle may have 7 floors with one person on each floor, and you must match each person to a specific floor. Sometimes extra details like colors, hobbies, or jobs are included to make it trickier.
Box-based puzzles involve arranging boxes in a specific order, usually stacked one on top of another. The clues may give relative positions like “Box A is above Box B” or “Box C is below Box D.” Sometimes, extra information like box colors, sizes, or labels is included to increase complexity.
In scheduling puzzles, events, tasks, or people are assigned to different days, months, or years. For example, seven friends may visit on different days of the week or in different months of the year. The puzzle gives clues about who comes when, and you need to find the exact schedule. Sometimes extra details like activities or locations are added to make it more challenging.
Classification puzzles require you to group people or items based on shared characteristics. For example, grouping based on favorite colors, professions, or hobbies. The clues help you decide which person belongs to which group. You need to use logic to link the given features correctly. Sometimes, there are three or more categories to match, which can make the puzzle more complex.
Other logic puzzles can be based on a variety of topics such as age comparisons, family relationships, heights, weights, or colors. For example, finding who is older, or arranging people by height. They may also involve blood relations where you figure out how people are connected in a family.
Puzzles and seating arrangements are the most important topics in the SBI Clerk Reasoning section. Every year, this topic alone carries around 12–23 marks in the prelims exam. This means almost half of the reasoning section’s marks come from puzzles.
So it’s not wrong to say that ignoring this topic can seriously affect your overall score. Directly reduce your chances of clearing the cut-off. The good thing is that the types of puzzles asked are usually repeated in a pattern, so with enough practice, you can easily score full marks in them. Here are some best tips you can follow while solving the puzzle questions for the exam
Always make a neat diagram before solving. Mark positions, directions (north/south), and fixed people first. A clean and neat picture helps you to see relations quickly and avoids confusion.
You can use simple symbols or short notes (L for left, R for right) to show relationships. In Circle circle-based puzzle, confirm positions first and cross out impossible positions to keep the work tidy.
Place people or items that are fixed (like “second to the right”) before trying trickier clues. This reduces options and makes the tough clues easier to place.
For seating puzzles, try the arrangement in both ways, normal and reverse order. One will usually be wrong, so checking both saves time and avoids mistakes.
If you get stuck, write down the remaining options and cut out the ones that don’t match the clues. This way, you solve it logically instead of guessing and finish faster.
Give each puzzle a fixed time (e.g., 6–8 minutes) while practicing. After the timer, review mistakes and repeat similar puzzle types. This builds speed and reduces exam stress.
