Home » SSC CGL » How to Start Your Preparation for SSC CGL 2026 Exam?

Dreaming of becoming an Income Tax Inspector or an ASO in the Ministry of External Affairs? If yes, then the SSC CGL (Combined Graduate Level) 2026 exam is the biggest opportunity knocking at your door. But let’s be honest—starting from zero will be tough for you. When you see the thick books and the huge syllabus, a question pops up in your mind: “Can I really do this?”, “Where do I even start?”, or “Do I need coaching?” The answer is simple: Yes, you can. And no, you don’t need expensive coaching if you have the right plan. In this blog, we have provided a step-by-step process to help you start your preparation for the SSC CGL 2026 exam. Just follow the steps carefully and take your preparation in the right direction, but before that, take a free mock test to check the level of the exam.

Step 1: Understand the Syllabus and Exam Pattern

Before you pick up a book, you must know what to study. SSC CGL has two main stages (Tiers).

Phase 1: Tier 1 (The Screening Test)

This is just a filter. The marks you score here are not added to your final result. You just need to pass (clear the cutoff).

  • Subjects: Maths, Reasoning, English, and General Awareness.
  • Questions: 100 (25 from each subject).
  • Time: 60 Minutes.
  • Negative Marking: 0.50 marks.

Phase 2: Tier 2 (The Real Game)

This is the stage that decides your job and rank.

  • Section 1: Maths (30 Qs) + Reasoning (30 Qs).
  • Section 2: English (45 Qs) + General Awareness (25 Qs).
  • Section 3: Computer Knowledge (20 Qs – Qualifying).
  • Typing Test: Mandatory for all posts.

Step 2: Books that You Should Use During Your SSC CGL 2026 Exam Preparation

Don’t buy a library. You only need one good book for each subject. Trust me, finishing one book 10 times is better than reading 10 books once.

1. English Language

  • Grammar: Plinth to Paramount (by Neetu Singh) OR SP Bakshi. These books explain rules in very simple language.
  • Vocabulary: Word Power Made Easy (Norman Lewis). Read it for 15 minutes daily.
  • Practice: Blackbook of English Vocabulary (for previous year words).

2. General Intelligence (Reasoning)

  • Concept: You don’t really need a book. YouTube videos are enough for topics like “Syllogism” or “Dice”.
  • Practice: Kiran Publication Previous Year Papers. Solve 50 questions daily.

3. Quantitative Aptitude (Maths)

  • For Beginners: Rakesh Yadav Class Notes. It has handwritten solutions that are easy to understand.
  • For Practice: Pinnacle or Kiran Chapter-wise PYQs.
  • Focus: In CGL, Advanced Maths (Geometry, Algebra, Trigonometry) is very important.

4. General Awareness (GK)

  • Static GK: Lucent’s General Knowledge (The Yellow Book). It is boring but essential.
  • Current Affairs: Don’t read newspapers for hours. Watch any monthly YouTube compilation (e.g., StudyIQ, Indialogue). Cover the last 8-10 months.

Step 3: Your 6-Month Master Plan for SSC CGL 2026 Exam Preparation

If you start today, here is how you should divide your time.

Month 1-2: Build Your Foundation

  • Maths: Focus on Arithmetic (Percentage, Ratio, Profit & Loss). Learn tables (1-30) and squares (1-50).
  • English: Complete the Grammar rules (Noun, Pronoun, Tenses).
  • Reasoning: Watch videos on specific topics, such as Coding-Decoding and Series.

Month 3-4: Level Up

  • Maths: Start Advanced Maths (Geometry, Algebra). This will take time, so be patient.
  • GK: Start reading Lucent. Focus on History and Polity first.
  • English: Start reading editorials or simple novels to improve reading speed (Important for Comprehension).

Month 5-6: The “Mock Test” Mode

  • Mock Tests: Give 1 mock test every alternate day.
  • Analysis: This is the best secret experiment. If you score low, check why. Was it a silly mistake? Or did you not know the concept?
  • Typing: Start practicing typing for 15 minutes daily. Aim for 30 WPM.

Common Mistakes to Avoid (Read Carefully!)

  1. Ignoring Typing & Computer: Many students score high in Maths/English but fail because they didn’t qualify in Computer or Typing. Don’t be that student.
  2. Not Giving Mocks: Most students think that they have learned the theory and that is enough. But they don’t know the pressure that they will face during the real exam, and they don’t take mocks. For that, they should take mocks.
  3. Chasing Multiple Teachers: Stick to one teacher for one subject. Following too many strategies will confuse you.

Conclusion

The journey of SSC CGL is a marathon, not a sprint. There will be days when you feel low, when mock scores drop, or when you feel like giving up. On those days, just remember why you started. Imagine your parents’ proud faces when you get that appointment letter. You have the potential. You have the plan. Now, all you need is action.
