How to Start Your English Preparation for SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam 2025
SSC CGL Tier 1 exam is ongoing, and it will end on September 26, 2025. As per the notification, Tier 2 is scheduled to be conducted in December 2025. And let me tell you, you won’t even realize how quickly the exam date will arrive. Those who have attempted the exam are strongly advised to start their preparation for the SSC CGL 2025 Tier 2 exam. English is one of the most scoring sections of the Tier 2 exam, only when you have prepared for it systematically. This blog has provided tips on how to start your English preparation for SSC CGL Tier 2 exam 2025.
You have already prepared for Tier 1 English, which means you know about the basics. By Tier 1, SSC tests your foundation, your ability to understand English, basic comprehension, and simple grammar. But, in Tier 2, where SSC raises the difficulty level, the syllabus gets vast, you are required to understand more deeply, and in more detail. Below, we have provided the syllabus for SSC CGL English Tier 2 section.
| Section | Topics Included |
|---|---|
| 1. Vocabulary | Synonyms, Antonyms, Homonyms, One Word Substitution, Idioms and Phrases |
| 2. Grammar and Usage | Spot the Error, Fill in the Blanks, Sentence Improvement, Active and Passive Voice, Direct and Indirect Speech, Spellings/Detecting Misspelt Words |
| 3. Sentence Structure | Shuffling of Sentence Parts, Shuffling of Sentences in a Passage |
| 4. Comprehension & Cloze | Cloze Passage, Comprehension Passages (3 or more): at least one simple story/book-based passage, others based on current affairs, reports, or editorials |
Note: If you compare the syllabus from Tier 1, then you will find that mostly the topics are the same in Tier 2. The difference is that the difficulty level will be high in Tier 2.
In short, Tier 1 checks if you know English. Tier 2 checks how well you can use it under pressure.
Most candidates start their preparation directly without knowing where they stand. Until you know where you stand, you can’t give your preparation the right direction. For that, you should give a full-length mock test (you can take a free mock test on PracticeMock). When you take a mock test, your score will tell you where you stand. Analyze your mock tests and note down the questions that you have attempted incorrectly. You can consider those questions as your weak areas. If you don’t do that, then it will be like a doctor diagnosing a patient without knowing the problem.
