Arithmetic Questions for RRB Clerk 2026: Preparing for the 2026 RRB Clerk exam? Arithmetic plays an important role in the quant section. You will likely see around 10-15 of these questions, which really matter for prelims. It’s all about using math in real-life experience. This blog will give you an idea of what kinds of arithmetic problems come and some questions to practice with. Just knowing the formulas isn’t enough; you need to know how to use them in different situations, and that’s what the RRB Clerk exam focuses on.

What is Arithmetic? What Are Its Types?

Arithmetic is the main part of maths where we solve problems using numbers and calculations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. In banking exams, Arithmetic questions came in the form of word problems. These word problems mainly check how well you can apply maths to real-life situations.  These are common topics in Arithmetic:

  • Profit and Loss
  • Simple and Compound Interest
  • Time, Speed, and Distance
  • Time and Work
  • Mixture and Alligation
  • Percentage
  • Averages
  • Ratio and Proportion
  • Ages
  • Pipes and Cisterns
  • Partnership
  • Boats and Streams

Importance and Weightage in RRB Clerk Exam

Arithmetic is a major part of the Quant section in both Prelims and Mains. In the Prelims exam, about 10–12 questions are asked from Arithmetic. In the Mains exam, it can go up to 15–18 questions. This means nearly 25% to 40% of the Quant section is based on Arithmetic. So, if you want to clear the cut-off and get a good score, you must prepare for Arithmetic properly. Regular practice of word problems helps you build both speed and accuracy, which are key to success in banking exams.

Quantitative Aptitude Quiz: Arithmetic Concepts Score: 0.00
Set 1: Percentage (Q1 – Q2)
Directions (Q1–Q2): Read the questions carefully and choose the correct answer.

Q1. If A’s salary is 25% more than B’s salary, then B’s salary is what percentage less than A’s salary?

Solution:
Let B’s salary = 100.
A’s salary = 125.
Difference = 125 − 100 = 25.
Percentage by which B’s salary is less than A’s salary:
= (25/125) × 100
= 20%
Therefore, B’s salary is 20% less than A’s salary.

Q2. The price of a book increases from ₹400 to ₹460. What is the percentage increase?

Solution:
Increase = ₹460 − ₹400 = ₹60
Percentage increase:
= (60/400) × 100
= 15%
Therefore, the price increases by 15%.
Set 2: Profit and Loss (Q3 – Q4)
Directions (Q3–Q4): Solve the following profit and loss questions.

Q3. A shopkeeper buys an article for ₹800 and sells it for ₹920. What is his profit percentage?

Solution:
Cost Price = ₹800
Selling Price = ₹920
Profit = ₹920 − ₹800 = ₹120
Profit percentage:
= (120/800) × 100
= 15%
Therefore, the profit is 15%.

Q4. An article is sold for ₹1,080 at a loss of 10%. Find its cost price.

Solution:
At a 10% loss, the selling price is 90% of the cost price.
90% of CP = ₹1,080
CP = 1,080 × 100/90
= ₹1,200
Therefore, the cost price is ₹1,200.
Set 3: Ratio and Average (Q5 – Q6)
Directions (Q5–Q6): Study the questions and solve them using the basic ratio and average concepts.

Q5. The ratio of the number of men to women in an office is 3:2. If there are 45 men, how many women are there?

Solution:
Men : Women = 3 : 2
3 parts = 45
1 part = 15
Women = 2 × 15 = 30
Therefore, there are 30 women.

Q6. The average of five numbers is 24. If four of the numbers are 18, 22, 25, and 27, find the fifth number.

Solution:
Average = 24
Number of values = 5
Total = 24 × 5 = 120
Sum of four numbers:
18 + 22 + 25 + 27 = 92
Fifth number:
= 120 − 92
= 28
Therefore, the answer is 28.
Set 4: Time and Work (Q7 – Q8)
Directions (Q7–Q8): Solve the following time and work questions.

Q7. A can complete a piece of work in 12 days and B can complete the same work in 18 days. In how many days can they complete the work together?

Solution:
A’s one-day work = 1/12
B’s one-day work = 1/18
Together:
= 1/12 + 1/18
LCM of 12 and 18 = 36
= 3/36 + 2/36
= 5/36
Time required:
= 36/5
= 7 1/5 days
Therefore, they complete the work together in 7 1/5 days.

Q8. A person can complete a work in 20 days. He works for 5 days and then leaves. What fraction of the work is left?

Solution:
Work done in one day = 1/20.
Work done in 5 days:
= 5/20
= 1/4
Work left:
= 1 − 1/4
= 3/4
Therefore, 3/4 of the work is left.
Set 5: Time and Distance (Q9 – Q10)
Directions (Q9–Q10): Solve the following questions based on speed, distance, and time.

Q9. A car travels at a speed of 60 km/h. How much distance will it cover in 2 hours 30 minutes?

Solution:
Time = 2 hours 30 minutes
= 2.5 hours
Distance = Speed × Time
= 60 × 2.5
= 150 km
Therefore, the car covers 150 km.

Q10. A train travels 360 km in 6 hours. What is its speed?

Solution:
Speed = Distance/Time

= 60 km/h
Therefore, the speed of the train is 60 km/h.
