Types Of Data Interpretation

Here’s a breakdown of common DI formats with smart solving tips:

  • Table-Based DI: Presents data in rows and columns based on figures like sales, population, production, scores, etc. Requires careful reading and quick math using percentages, ratios, or averages.
  • Bar Graphs & Column Charts: Compare categories visually. Solve by bar heights or lengths, then apply subtraction or ratios for comparisons.
  • Line Graphs: Show trends over time or categories. Focus on patterns and incremental changes rather than raw numbers to derive faster insights.
  • Pie Charts (Single & Double): Great for visual distribution of data. Converting sectors to percentages and then deriving numbers is key. Double pie charts appear often and require correlating two different distributions.
  • Caselet DI: Text-based mini-passages containing embedded numerical data. Organise info systematically (e.g., jotting down in a mini-table) for clarity.
  • Mixed DI Sets: Combine multiple DI styles, making them more challenging. Often seen in mains to test layered computation and logical reasoning.

Quick-Solving Strategies for Each DI Type

Here we are providing a quick solving strategy for DI questions. Candidates must follow this strategy to boost their question-solving speed.

  1. Memorise Key Formulas
Before starting to solve questions, you can memorise some Percentages, averages, ratios, time-work, time-speed-distance, profit & loss, and simple interest with instant recall.
  2. Use Approximation & Simplification
Use round figures and estimation to eliminate impossible options quickly.
  3. Convert to Ratios or Percentages
Especially useful with pie charts and comparison questions.
  4. Practice Mental Math
DI demands speed: work on fast multiplier/divider shortcuts and simplifying complex operations.
  5. Read Caselets Intelligently
Skim for numbers first, then decipher relationships and frame structured notes.
  6. Avoid Clutter
Do only necessary computations, ignore irrelevant info.
  7. Strategise Time Allocation
In pre-mains, spend no more than 2 minutes per DI set in prelims; allocate more strategically in mains.
