Master Strategy to Solve Puzzle Questions Efficiently

Solving a high-level Mains puzzle within 4 minutes may seem difficult, but with a systematic approach, you can easily achieve it. The key lies in choosing the right puzzle, building a structured diagram, and quickly eliminating incorrect possibilities. Below is the exact 4-minute technique followed by toppers and experts for IBPS Clerk Mains.

Step 1: Identify the Puzzle Type (10–15 Seconds)

Before writing anything, quickly analyse:

  • Type → Floor / Seating / Box / Hybrid / Month–Date
  • Variables involved → 2, 3, or 4
  • Whether the puzzle looks solvable in one diagram or needs a case
  • Presence of direct clues

If the puzzle appears extremely lengthy or confusing, skip it immediately and return later.

Step 2: Mark All Definite Clues First (30 Seconds)

Definite clues are those that fix something instantly:

  • “A is on floor 7”
  • “B sits 3rd right of C”
  • “G likes Mango”
  • “Laptop is in ox 4”

Place these in your main diagram first. These form the foundation and prevent mistakes later.

Step 3: Draw the Smart Diagram (20–30 Seconds)

For different puzzles:

  • Floor/Box: Draw a vertical list (1–8 or 1–10 floors/boxes)
  • Seating: Draw a circle or row with equal spacing
  • Month/Date: Make a table with both columns
  • Hybrid: Use grid format (Person → Floor → City → Company)

A clean diagram saves 30–40 seconds during the puzzle.

Step 4: Link All Direct Clues (45 Seconds)

Now place clues that connect 2–3 elements:

  • “A lives above D”
  • “The one who likes Orange sits 2nd left of the person from Delhi”
  • “C sits opposite F”

Do not touch ambiguous clues yet.
Only connect clues that fit directly into your diagram.

Step 5: Handle Twisty/Case-Making Clues Smartly (60–70 Seconds)

Identify clues that force two possible arrangements, such as:

  • “E sits either 2nd left or 2nd right of H”
  • “The person who works at Infosys lives on floor 4 or 6”
  • “A sits between B and D but does not face inside”

Make only 2 cases maximum.
Avoid making 3–4 cases — it kills time.

As soon as a contradiction appears in one case,
eliminate it instantly and proceed.

Step 6: Fill Remaining Blanks Using Elimination (45–60 Seconds)

By now, 70% puzzle will be solved.
Fill remaining spaces using:

  • “Not possible” logic
  • Excluding already used items
  • Checking adjacency & direction rules
  • Cross-checking each relationship

This final sweep must be fast.

Step 7: Quick Verification (15–20 Seconds)

Before moving to the question:

  • Check left/right placements
  • Check facing direction
  • Check the “above/below” accuracy
  • Verify any exception-based clue

A 20-second verification prevents silly mistakes that cost all 5 marks.
