SSC CHSL Typing Test 2026: Speed, Rules & Tips to Clear it Easily
You solved thousands of Maths questions, memorized a whole dictionary of English words, and finally scored amazing marks in the SSC CHSL Tier 2 written exam. But on the final day, your fingers freeze on the keyboard, and you fail the Typing Test. Sounds like a nightmare, right? Unfortunately, this is the harsh reality for thousands of brilliant students every year. Many candidates take the SSC CHSL Typing Test (Skill Test) very lightly. They think, “I chat so fast on WhatsApp, I can easily type on a computer.” But typing on a mobile screen and typing 35 words per minute on a hard, noisy computer keyboard that you have touched before under exam pressure are two completely different things. This test is strictly qualifying in nature, but if you fail this, your high written marks become zero. Your entire year of hard work goes to waste. But do not panic! In this blog, we have broken down the exact rules, speed requirements, and secret tips to help you pass the SSC CHSL Typing Test easily.
The SSC CHSL Tier 2 exam has a special module just to check your typing speed. It is divided into two parts based on the post you have applied for:
You have to perform this test on a computer provided by the exam center. You will see a paragraph on the top half of the screen, and you have to type the same text in the bottom half.
SSC does not ask for the same speed for every post. The rules are different depending on what job you are targeting. Here is the simple breakdown:
You can choose to give this test in either English or Hindi. You have to choose your language while filling out the application form.
For Data Entry Operators, SSC measures speed in “Key Depressions” (how many times you press a button on the keyboard).
You cannot just press random buttons fast to get 35 WPM. SSC is very strict about accuracy. Every spelling mistake, missed word, or extra space is counted as an error.
If you make too many mistakes, you will be disqualified. Here is the maximum mistake limit generally allowed by SSC:
Smart Tip: A “Full Mistake” means skipping a whole word or spelling it completely wrong. A “Half Mistake” means putting an extra space or making a capital letter small. Focus on accuracy first, speed will come automatically!
If you are a beginner, do not worry. You can achieve 35 WPM in just 45 to 60 days if you follow these simple rules:
Rule 1: Buy a Cheap, Hard Keyboard: Stop practicing on your smooth, flat laptop keyboard! The keyboards at the SSC exam center are usually old, thick, and have hard buttons. Buy a basic desktop keyboard (like Acer, HP, or Dell) for Rs. 300 and connect it to your laptop/PC to practice.
Rule 2: Never Look at the Keyboard: This is the biggest secret. Learn “Touch Typing.” You should memorize where the keys are so that your eyes are always fixed on the screen. If you look down at the keyboard and then up at the screen, you will lose a lot of time.
Rule 3: Ignore the Noise: In the exam hall, 100 students will start hitting their keyboards at the exact same time. The “tak-tak-tak” noise will sound like a machine gun firing. It can make you very nervous. When practicing at home, play “Keyboard typing sound” on YouTube in the background so you get used to the noise.
Rule 4: Warm Up Your Fingers: Before the actual 10-minute test begins, SSC gives you a 2 to 3-minute “Mock Trial” or warm-up. Take this seriously. Press all the keys, check if the spacebar and shift keys are working perfectly, and let your fingers get comfortable.
Typing is like riding a bicycle. You cannot learn it by watching YouTube videos or reading a book. You have to put your hands on the keyboard and practice daily. Dedicate just 1 hour every day to typing practice while you prepare for your written exams. Do not wait for the Tier 1 results to start typing! Consistency is your only magic trick here. Keep your back straight, take a deep breath, and type your way to success.

Yes, the typing test is strictly qualifying. The marks you get in typing are not added to your final merit list. You just need to cross the minimum speed and accuracy cutoff.
Yes, the backspace key is fully allowed. You can erase and correct your mistakes. However, using backspace too much will slow down your overall typing speed, so try to type accurately on the first go.
For candidates opting for Hindi typing, SSC generally provides two font layout options on the software: Mangal (Inscript) and Kruti Dev. You can choose the one you are comfortable with.
No, absolutely not! You only have to give the test in one language. You will select your preferred language (English or Hindi) while filling out the SSC CHSL online application form.
If you fail to meet the required typing speed or cross the maximum error limit, you will be disqualified from the entire selection process, regardless of how high your written exam marks are.
