SSC CGL Tier 1 results are out, and the Tier 2 exam is scheduled to be conducted on January 18 and 19, 2026. If you are appearing for this exam, you must know that the English Language & Comprehension is the biggest and most important section in the exam. In Tier 2, English holds the highest weightage with 45 questions carrying 135 marks, which makes it the most important. A good score here can help you secure posts like ASO or Excise Inspector. But most students take this section lightly and do guesswork in the exam, due to which negative marking (-1 mark) pulls their rank down instantly. To help you master this high-scoring section, we have provided Free SSC CGL Tier 2 English Topic Tests. These tests cover grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, and everything you need to practice.

Get Familiar with the SSC CGL Tier 2 English Syllabus

You might think English is easy, but Tier 2 English is different from Tier 1. The questions are deeper, longer, and test your understanding, not just rules.

Key Areas to Focus On:

  • Reading Comprehension (RC): This is the most important topic of the Tier 2 exam. You will get at least 3-4 passages in the exam. Some will be simple stories, but others will be tough editorials. You need to read fast and understand the hidden meaning.
  • Cloze Test: A paragraph with blanks. It tests your grammar + vocabulary + common sense all at once.
  • Vocabulary: Expect questions on Idioms, Phrasal Verbs, and Spelling. Tier 2 often asks “confusing words” (like effect vs. affect).
  • Grammar: Direct-Indirect and Active-Passive questions are “free marks.” They follow fixed rules, so practice them until you get 100% accuracy.

Why Topic Tests Are Important for SSC CGL Tier 2?

Most students start practicing with full-length mock tests, but they don’t know that this will not help them to analyze their weak English topics effectively. If you want to know your weak topics and want to practice on them, then practicing English topic tests is the only way to do that. Here we have mentioned why topic tests are the most important for you:

  1. Find Your “Weak Areas”: A full mock tells you, “You got 100/135.” A topic test tells you, “You lost marks in Prepositions.” This helps you fix the exact hole in your preparation.
  2. Master RC & Cloze Test: These two topics alone can give you 20-25 questions. You cannot master them by reading rules. You need to practice them daily. Topic tests give you that daily dose.
  3. Speed Up! Tier 2 is long. If you spend 10 minutes on one passage, you will miss other questions. Topic tests train your brain to read and answer fast.
  4. Accuracy Check: In Tier 2, for every wrong answer, you lose 1 mark. That is very high! Topic tests help you know which questions to skip so you don’t get negative marks.

How to Use English Topic Tests to Maximize Your Score?

Just attempting the test isn’t enough. You need a strategy.

  • Read Daily: Before taking the test, read one English editorial (from a newspaper or app). It warms up your brain.
  • Don’t Guess: If you don’t know the meaning of a word in Synonyms, skip it. Don’t lose 1 mark for a wild guess.
  • Analyze the ‘Why’: When you check the solution, don’t just see the right answer. Ask why the other three options are wrong. This eliminates confusion in the final exam.
  • Note Down New Words: Found a new Idiom in the test? Write it in a small diary. Revise this diary every Sunday.

Remember: English is the most “scoring” section. It takes less time than Maths and gives more marks than GK. Master it, and your dream job is yours.
