4. Sunrise/Shadow Based	Use the sun’s position and shadow direction to deduce orientation	If it’s morning and a man’s shadow falls towards the west, which direction is he facing?	Morning ⇒ sun in East ⇒ shadow in West ⇒ man faces East ⇒  Answer: East
5. Direction Between Points	Find the direction from one point to another after the movements	Sita walks 5 m North, then 4 m East. Rani walks 5 m South, then 4 m East. What is Sita’s direction with respect to Rani?	Sita is 10 m North of Rani on the same East line ⇒  Answer: North
6. Angle Between Turns	Sometimes asked to find the angle between the initial and final direction	If a person turns from North to East, what is the angle turned?	From North to East = 90° clockwise ⇒  Answer: 90°
7. Minimum Distance Travelled	Based on movements in different directions, calculate the shortest path (displacement)	A person walks 3 km North, then 4 km East. What is the shortest distance back to the starting point?	Right-angled triangle: √(3² + 4²) = √(9+16) = √25 ⇒ Answer: 5 km

Tips to Solve Direction Sense Questions Quickly

Here are a few points to keep in mind while solving the direction sense questions quickly and with accuracy.

• Read the question, but focus on what is being asked and write it first.
• If in the hints it is written as Right turn, then take it as 90° and in clockwise direction; whereas if it is written as Left = 90°then it is considered as anti-clockwise.
• Look out for hints such as  “Left from his point of view”
• Use the Pythagorean formula to calculate distance if necessary. An example is discussed in the table above.
